Oliver Sonny Mason : Obituary

Oliver “Sonny” Mason retired from the Floyd County Board of Education after 30 years of teaching and coaching. He coached baseball and football at Coosa High School in Rome, Georgia. Sonny’s passion for sports and love of young people endured throughout his life. Mr. Mason was preceded in death by his first wife Lucy White Mason, and his parents Margurite and Oliver Lee Mason, Sr of Covington, Georgia.

He is survived by his wife of twenty-one years, Myra Mason of Blue Ridge; a son, Chris Mason of Dalton, stepchildren Burke and Suzanne George of Charlotte, NC, Brian and Cindy George of Blue Ridge, GA, and Carroll and Lori Chastain of Ellijay, Georgia. He was adored by his grandchildren: Lindsay Godfrey, Genene and Rob Churchill, Will Godfrey, Stephanie George, Caroline Godfrey, Jessica George, Erin George, Rachel George, Mary Katherine Mason, Connor Mason, and John Miles Mason as well as two great-grandsons Michael Lickey and Mason Godfrey. He is also survived by two sisters, Janet Mason Harper and Teresa Mason Lingler.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Mr. Mason to the Fannin County High School Quarterback Club.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, November 3, at 4:00 PM from the Calvary Baptist Church in Rome, Ga.

The family will meet with friends at Akins Funeral Home in Blue Ridge Wednesday evening from 6 until 9 PM and at the Calvary Baptist Church in Rome from 2:00 until 4:00 PM Thursday before the service.
