Rebels Ride High: Cradle Championship at “Cats’” Expense

The Fannin Middle School football team hosted the championship trophy, declawing the Clear Creek Middle School Bobcats, 18-6. The Rebels rose, with 16-0 Fannin fourth quarter Rebels’ runClear Creek drew Fannin’s blood first, scoring with a 48 yard pass from Russell Cochron to Michael Pruett on the first drive of the game. The Rebels replied with a drive down to the Clear Creek half inch line, featuring some fine Fannin Rebel running from Jack Roper, Bradley Fields, and Jerod Petty. In the end the Gilmer goal line defense rose against the Rebels and stopped Daniel Kinser on fourth and goal, as the first quarter was coming to a close.

Fannin forced a three and out. The Bobcats sacked the punt team, taking a safety instead of punting out of the end zone, to make the score 6-2 with 5:34 left in the half. Neither team scored again to close the half with the same score.

The defenses ruled throughout the day, especially in the third, as neither team was able to procure a plethora of first downs. With just under seven minutes in the third, a 56 flare pass from Petty to Roper opened up the Fannin floodgates; the Rebels. Roper would eventually score on the ground, and with successful two point conversion, the Rebels were in the lead 10-6 with just under seven minutes left in the game.

On the ensuing possession, Fannin’s Dylan Usry, usurped Clear Creek’s “Cats’” rhythm with a stuffing of Cochron to force third and long. On the next play, Petty’s pesky pursuit of Bobcats quarterback, Thaddeus Bowers, led to a sack. Bobcat, Bowers, bounced the ball in disgust and was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct.

On fourth and long, Clear Creek clearly snapped the ball over the punter’s head, and out of the end zone, increasing the lead by two in Fannin’s favor, and forcing a free kick that the Rebels returned, as Roper raced 55 yards to the end zone. The score sealed the Rebels’ victory.
