Rebels Rise Over Union: Panthers Pounded 6-0 With FYN’s Exclusive Video of Pregame Ceremony

The Fannin County High School Lady Rebels softball team hosted the Panthers of Union County, and pounded the Panthers with a plethora of timely hits and strike outs to secure a 6-0 victory. The game was noteworthy for more than just the win by the home team. The day was commemorated as Cancer Awareness day, which involved the members of the Lady Rebels’ team honoring those who have battled cancer. After watching the junior varsity come from behind 3-1 victory over the Panthers, the varsity assembled for a brief ceremony honoring those loved ones who have dealt with “The Big C.” Starting pitcher, Sadie Golden, threw a complete game shut out that began with a retiring of the first three Panther batters.

The Lady Rebels pounced on the Panthers in the bottom of the first inning. Karly Thompson’s two out double started the Rebels’ rise. She immediately stole third. Alexis Collis’ RBI line drive single to center field made the score 1-0. Candace German followed with a two run homer that put the Lady Rebels up 3-0.

The second inning

saw neither team score as the Panthers once again were retired in three straight at bats, while the home team was able to get runners on first and second, but was unable to bring them home.

The top of the third featured another three up three down lackluster performance from the Panthers. It also featured the play of the day; when Lady Rebel, Natalie McLaughlin, pilfered a Panthers’ single with a diving catch that lead one amazed Union fan to remark,

“That was a very good catch. I didn’t think she’d have a chance at it.”

The score remained the same until the bottom of the fifth, when speedster, Missy Dixon, led off with a single that just beat the throw from third. Ashley Watkins followed with a double deep to left field that put women on second and third. Thompson’s double, that could have been the twin of her first inning double, “ran so far away” from center field, that two more runs scored. Following a sacrifice grounder by Alexis Collis, German’s RBI double, provided the game’s final score of 6-0.
