Lordship of Christ – What does it mean to me?

Religion

Christ is Lord! It doesn’t matter what our culture says. In fact the Scripture teaches that Christ-followers are “not to be conformed to the world but we are to be transformed by the renewing of our minds that we might prove what is the perfect will of God” (Rom. 12:2). In other words, we are not to be shaped by the world but rather by the Word of God. The Word of God, teaches that Christ is Lord over every area of life! Remember Kuyper’s words: “There is not a square inch within the domain of our human life of which the Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not say, ‘MINE.’ ” I have heard it described as “Christ is Lord 24/7!” Twenty-four hours a day; seven days a week!

What does this mean to me in the every day affairs of life? Things like when my car doesn’t start, or there’s not enough check at the end of the month, or well you know what I mean- the daily activities of life. Let’s begin this discussion by answering a couple of questions.

Why are we to serve the Lord in the first place? Am I not my own man? Don’t I get to do what I want to do? Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 6:19b-20 that “you are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” We belong to the Lord Jesus! He bought us with His precious blood (Acts 20:28). It was Christ work upon the cross at Calvary where He gave His life for us to purchase us for His own. He paid the debt that we couldn’t pay- He bought us! Therefore, because he belongs to the Lord, the Christ-follower is to live his life for the Lord’s glory. This means to please the Lord in all that we do. How can we be sure that we are living in a way that pleases Him?

God has given us the means by which we can know. The Bible is our guide. The Lord tells us in the Bible what we are to believe about Him and what we should do and say and think. We know that our lives please the Lord when we do and say and think as the Bible says we should do and say and think. The Bible is a trustworthy guide because it is God’s Word. The 66 books of the Old and New Testaments were written by men who were guided by the Holy Spirit (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21) in such a marvelous way that their words were the words are the words of God Himself. Therefore, the Bible is our only guide for glorifying or pleasing the Lord.

Why are we to serve the Lord? Christ-followers want to serve the Lord because of their love for Him. In 2 Corinthians 5:14, the apostle says that the “love of Christ controls or motivates us.” When asked what was the greatest commandment, Jesus responded, “the greatest commandment is to love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all you mind” (Matthew 22:37). Remember- He loved us enough to die for us. Now, we get to love Him back. Our love for Him is demonstrated through our obedience (John 14:15).

Obedience to what? Once again we see the significance of the Bible- God’s Word. The Bible is the only guide for all we do (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:3). The Bible is not merely a devotional book providing us with comfort, encouragement and peace but it is the “manual of operations” which gives us our “marching orders.”

We have established three critical principles. First, we understand that the desire of the Christ-follower is to glorify or please the Lord in everything that he does. Second, the motivation for living under the Lordship of Christ is the love that a Christ-follower has for Him. And thirdly, the manual for living under the Lordship of Christ is the Bible.
