The Bible on Inflation (Part I)

When you read the title of my article you may say to yourself “huh?” What does inflation have to do with my spiritual life? Actually, a lot as do so many other things that people don’t categorize as “spiritual.” Typically, and incorrectly, people categorize things into either secular or sacred categories. The truth is that everything is spiritual. When I write an article or speak in a church, I base everything on a basic foundational truth. That truth is God’s Word addresses everything, every situation in life. It is not just a spiritual soul food book. It is more than history, ethics, prose, and wonderful stories. It is the owner’s manual for all of life. It is the ultimate authority in economics, law, government, business, family, ethics, art, music, employer-employee relationships, warfare, and every other thing one can imagine.

Many Christians accept the Bible as God’s Word and they believe it, as they should. They study it, memorize it, and try to apply it in their lives. However, what many miss is the fact that it really does apply to everything.

For example, the Bible actually gives us great insight into the problem of inflation, an issue facing us right here, right now. I pick inflation because it is an issue that few would relate to Scripture. I use it to further my point that the Bible is exhaustive in its presentation of truth in every area of life.

Let’s look at Isaiah 1:22, one simple verse that says so much. It says: Your silver has become dross, Your drink diluted with water (NASB). The Message adds some insight to its meaning. It reads: Your coins are all counterfeits. Your wine is watered down.

These verses clearly describe the process of inflation. This has economic, ethical, and for America, worldwide diplomatic implications. The world is tied to our currency to a large degree so what happens to it affects a lot of people. We will talk about the specifics of inflation and the biblical connections next week. Stand by for Part II .
