Evans Finishes First Fannin Season

Coach Robert Evans wrapped up his inaugural season as the boys tennis coach at Fannin High School, by staging the first ever Annual Fannin High School Faculty student Mixed Doubles Tennis Tournament, previously covered exclusively by FYN.The team finished a paltry 3-8; however, the Rebels featured only four members. The standard number of players on a team is seven. Evans, who was informed of his status as tennis coach belatedly, listed as one his stated goals for next year as fielding a full team and making the region tournament.

“Competition will hopefully make for a better team,” Evans said.

The four man team was three quarters underclassmen, with one freshman and two sophomores, which, according to Evans, is “a good base to build on.” One of the building blocks, sophomore Colon Owens, the number one singles player for the Rebels, made the All-Region 8AA North team.

Evans said that because of the popularity of tennis in the area, he is confident that he will be able to build interest in the team for next year. He also plans on meeting periodically with his players and others interested in participating to assess skills and condition for next season.

The end of the season faculty student game was the brain child of Evans.

“I did that down south (Savannah) and it was always a big success,” Evans said.

He felt that the mixed doubles tournament would be “a good positive thing to end the season with.”
