Lady Rebels’ Rambunctiousness Outlasts Oglethorpe’s Lady Patriots’ Pride

The Fannin High School Lady Rebels’ soccer team hosted the Lady Patriots of Oglethorpe County, in the first round match up the region tournament. The winner of sub-region 8AA were able to defend the home turf with a 6-4 victory, that allowed Fannin to advance to the second round of the tournament.Fannin was fierce from the first minute, with a shot on goal that was defended by Oglethorpe’s goal keeper, Rebekah LaFleur. The rowdy Rebel ladies refused to be denied; constantly terrorizing the Lady Patriot’s goal with seven shots in the first eight minutes.
Fittingly Fannin’s seventh shot hit the mark when #7, Cheyenne Golden, put in a rebound of a deflected shot to make the score one to nil in favor of the home team with 32:29 left in the first half. A mere 14 seconds later Golden, was “Golden” like Pony Boy from the Outsiders when she scored the Lady Rebels’ second goal of the game.
The game was drowning in a pool of physicality as both teams “let the bodies hit the floor” throughout the game. The Lady Rebels had a chance to increase the score to three-nil, but a direct kick by Meghan Bennett was well defended by LaFleur.
The Lady Rebels offense led to the defense being more miserly than Ebenezer Scrooge before he saw Tiny Tim. The Lady Patriots first shot on goal did not come until 30 minutes were left in the half. Overall the Lady Rebels held a two nil advantage on the scoreboard and a 14-4 shots on goal advantage. Fannin also had two goals wiped out by offsides penalties.
The second half seemed like it would be a tale of two halves as Oglethorpe’s Clare Severens produced the Lady Patriots first scoring missile with a goal scored at the 38:44 mark, just a minute and 16 seconds into the half. Severens outran the competition and was able to beat Cochran when the goal keeper came out to challenge the ball.
The goal seemed to energize the visitors as the aggression showed by the Lady Rebels in the first half reversed to the Lady Patriots. With 33:59 left in the game, Severens struck again tying the game up at 2-2. The goal situation was identical to the first, with Severens outrunning the pack and beating Cochran again.
Fannin fought back. Holly Wolford broke the tie with goal scored at the 28:11 mark. Wolford’s goal seemed to put the yell back in the Lady Rebels. Fannin felt the flames of victory, getting hot with another goal to make the score 4-2. This one came at the feet of Meghan Bennett. The Oglethorpe let it be known that there was a great amount of displeasure with that particular goal. The Oglethorpe defender fell while both players jostled for position allowing Bennett the one on one opportunity with LaFleur.
The Lady Patriots battled back with a goal, via penalty kick by Laura Abney, which brought the visitors to within one. The Lady Rebels relentless attack on goal produced to more goals. Another one from Wolford, with 2:16 left in the game as well as the last goal, via a header from Ali Martin with 57.9 left. The Lady Patriots did not “go quietly into that good night.” Abney scored again for Oglethorpe with 29 seconds left.
