Rebels Remain Undefeated After Homestand

The Fannin High School Rebels baseball team currently has a record of 4-0-1 after a two game homestand that featured a 6-1 thrashing of Union County and a 5-3 win over Dawson County. Both victories were against sub-region opponents. The Rebels previously tied the Gilmer High School Bobcats 3-3 in a game that was called due to nightfall.The Panthers of Union County were lambasted early by the Rebels, as the Rebels scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Ryan “Rhino” Nix hit a base clearing double that gave the Rebels a 3-0 lead. Daniel Roper followed immediately with a home run to give the home team a 5-0 lead.

Pitcher, Tyler McClure allowed zero runs and zero hits in five innings of work. He struck out 12 of 18 batters faced, and threw a total of 80 pitches, 45 of which were strikes. James Bennett finished the last two innings giving up one hit and one run, striking out four of the 10 batters he faced.

Two days after pouncing on the Panthers of Union County the Rebels were tasked with taming the Tigers of Dawson County. The Rebels drew first blood when Garrison Sisson scored off of McClure’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning.

Fannin proceeded to fan the flames of victory when Korey Satterfield scored after Jason Burnett hit a base clearing double in the bottom of the third. However, the Tigers tallied a run in the top of the fourth inning.

Nix responded with a lead off home run in the bottom of the fourth to give the Rebels a 3-1 lead. The lead was increased when Satterfield hit a two run home scoring both him and Brett Davis.

The Tigers scored the final runs of the game with a two run home run in the top of the seventh inning; however, the Rebels were able to secure the victory.

Rebels coach David Dyer while happy with the results of the homestand, would like his team to “develop a killer instinct.”

“We got to do a better job of putting teams away,” he said. “I don’t want them to be satisfied.”

Dyer also acknowledged that winning sub-region games was beneficial, because,

“The number one and number two seeds host the three and four seed from other regions” in the state tournament.

After tearing up the “Tiger Blood” Charlie Sheen Style, the Rebels were treated to BBQ provided by the Blue Ridge First Baptist Church Youth Group.
