Braves Sign General Manager Frank Wren to Two-Year Contract Extension

Atlanta Braves President John Schuerholz announced today that the Club has signed Executive Vice President and General Manager Frank Wren to a two-year contract extension through the 2013 season. Wren, 52, is entering his fourth season as General Manager after previously serving as Assistant General Manager to Schuerholz for eight seasons (2000-07).
“Frank has done an excellent job leading our baseball operations the last three years, culminating with a return trip to the playoffs last season,” Schuerholz said.

“He and his staff have worked extremely hard in strengthening our major league Club and our minor league system. Frank handled the difficult and important task of selecting Fredi Gonzalez to manage the Braves following Bobby Cox’s retirement at the conclusion of the 2010 season,” Schuerholz also said.

The 2011 campaign marks Wren’s 12th with the Braves. He was named to his current post on October 11, 2007, when Schuerholz became the team president.

Following the Braves’ 2010 playoff appearance as the National League’s Wild Card entry, Wren moved quickly and made the first big trade of the 2010-11 offseason by acquiring All-Star second baseman Dan Uggla from the Florida Marlins. In January, Uggla inked a five-year contract, giving the Braves the right-handed power they have missed in recent seasons.

He was the Baltimore Orioles’ general manager in 1999 after serving as the Florida Marlins’ vice president/assistant general manager from 1991 through 1998. He joined the Braves on October 13, 1999.

Wren began his front office career as the general manager of the Jamestown Expos of the New York-Penn League in 1985. He then became Montreal’s assistant scouting director and, in 1989, was appointed the team’s director of Latin American scouting and operations.
