Owls Crush Jackets in Convocation Center

A record 4,784 gathered at the Kennesaw State University Convocation Center to see the home school Fighting Owls’ first ever defeat of an Atlantic Coast Conference team, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 80-67.

LaDarius Green hit an opening three pointer 46 seconds into the first period, which sparked a 7-0 run. Two quick buckets by the 1-1 Jackets made it 7-4 before the Owls pulled away to a 25-13 lead with 8:53 left in the first half with an 18-9 run. The Owls lead 41-26 at the half, and although the Jackets got to within five points, the Owls held the lead throughout the game and came away victorious in front of a raucous home crowd.

Green who set a career high in points (19) as did teammate Spencer Dixon (27), who also dished six dimes. After an impassioned speech from head coach Tony Ingle, the Owls went out and stung the Jackets. Four different players had double digit points, lead by Dixon and Green. Senior Kelvin McConnell made three critical first half three pointers. Green and sophomore Aaron Anderson windexed the glass, grabbing boards like Bob Villa with a B.O.G.O card at Home Depot with 12 and 10 rebounds respectively. It was Green’s fourth career double double. As a team the Owls shot .531 from the floor in the first half (17-32), and .467 for the game (28-60).

The Owls were the second team from their conference, the Atlantic Sun, to beat a team from the A.C.C. in four days. Stetson beat Wake Forest 89-79 this past Friday. The last team to upset the Yellow Jackets from the A-Sun is no longer a member. The College of Charleston beat the Jackets on January 16, 1993.
