Congressman Doug Collins Visits Fannin County Republicans

Politics

In a time when Congressmen are canceling town halls due to frustration, nothing, not even heavy rain, could deter Fannin County Republicans from eating bar-b-que and listening to Representative Doug Collins speak and answer questions that showed Fannin County Republicans were knowledgeable and like to have a little fun.

Collins began by stating that he knows people are frustrated with Washington and that he, too, is frustrated. He mentioned some positive actions accomplished by his office. Some of these included: assistance for Veterans, assisting his constituents with social security issues, as well as offering assistance with obtaining visas and passports. He also mentioned he was thrilled that many of his constituents had visited Washington, D.C.

He then outlined the items that, in his opinion, needed to be fixed in Washington. He mentioned that he would like to limit the power of the EPA and cut bureaucracy in Washington.

He then ended with a brief overview of what to expect when the House reconvenes in September. He will be sponsoring a bill to end “sue n’ settle,” which will make government agencies go to court if a disagreement occurs, rather than getting a settlement. Defunding Planned Parenthood will also be on the agenda for September. In addition, anticipates some fights during the budget process this year. Lastly, he mentioned he is supporting Scott Walker in the 2016 Presidential Election.

After he spoke, he opened the floor to questions which ranged from frustrated citizens to the lighthearted. Among the topics covered by the questions were No Child Left Behind Re-authorization, Obamacare, Tax Reform, and who would be his ideal opponent in an MMA (mixed martial arts) fight against Obama.

On No Child Left Behind Collins said, “I believe both republicans and democrats sometimes get good ideas that go very, very bad. I believe No Child Left Behind frankly was not a success that President Bush left us. There were a lot of good intentions.”

“We passed a bill back in June that made at least steps forward. I voted for the A+ Act which…didn’t pass. It would have basically took a block grant, alloted money and basically dismantle No Child Left Behind completely and gave the states and locals more control. I would prefer to see that.”

On Why Obamacare has not been repealed: He said that the House and Senate will attempt to repeal Obamacare, but currently doesn’t have 2/3 of the House or Senate’s approval to override a veto. An Obamacare repeal could happen with a Republican President, but the election is 2 years away.

On Tax Reform: “I think you’ll see something this year…The problem we’re having right now is frankly the administration has agreed to work on corporate tax reform, but they’re not willing to work on individual tax reform. You’re probably going to see some of it come in the form of popping in the transportation act…I’m Fair Tax Forward.”

On his ideal opponent in an Mixed Martial Arts fight against Obama “Ha ha. I have no idea..I don’t think he’d ever show up [to the fight].”

The Republican Party of Fannin County was enthusiastic to see their representative, perhaps not only because of frustration, but to be able to directly contribute to the democratic process by voicing their concerns.
