Fannin County School System issued a statement concerning a school threat

FANNIN COUNTY, Ga. – The Fannin County School System issued a statement early this morning to let parents and students know that there was an unsubstantiated threat to the middle school that School Resource Officers were made aware of last night.

“‘Sergeant Darvin Couch, Lieutenant Anthony Walden, and Deputy Thomas Kay have worked diligently through the night, and the threat has not been substantiated; however, out of an abundance of caution, additional law enforcement will be on-site at the middle school today to ensure the safety of our children,” read the statement issued online.

Although the school has released a statement and posted more security, many parents have been expressing their concerns that this is simply not enough.

There have been calls of transparency for the school to address what the actual threat was and how they became aware of the issue.

Some feel that they are owed more of an explanation as this threat of violence could have directly affected their student.

FYN has reached out to school officials for more information but is yet to hear back.

UPDATE: Sheriff Dane Kirby just issued a statement regarding the threat at the middle school:

“The situation involving Fannin Middle School that began last night has been resolved. During the evening hours yesterday, a threat of violence was communicated between two students. This information was reported to a parent who immediately contacted the Sheriff’s Office. An investigation began last night and at approximately 10 am this morning, an individual was taken into custody.

At NO time were any students or teachers in any danger. Preliminary information indicates that the student made the remarks thinking that it would be “FUNNY”. An extra security presence did exist at Fannin Middle School until a resolution was reached, however, NONE of the other schools were left uncovered by law enforcement for ONE minute during this event. The individual who made the threats never entered school property.

The safety of our children is our utmost priority. We are thankful for all the assistance
provided by the school system and everyone else involved.”
