Rebels Advance to Playoffs
Fannin County High, Team FYN Sports November 2, 2019
Last night, Fannin County took on the Lumpkin County Indians for their homecoming game. The Rebels had a streak of two losses in a row and hoped to break the trend.
Fannin won the toss and decided to receive the ball. Treylyn Owensby was the go to guy for the night as he earned over 230 rushing yards for the Rebels, putting him at over 1,000 yards for the season. Owensby was the first to make anything happen as he ran the ball in for a Fannin touchdown.
Sara Sosebee’s extra point attempt was good, giving the Rebels a 7-0 lead over Lumpkin. Sosebee also kicked off where the Indian’s offense received and found Dalton Ross to stop them. Junior, James Mercer, made his mark on defense as he earned a big stop for the Rebels. Campbell Consentino and JoJo Goodwin had great coverage as they earned a Fannin fourth down.
After Rebel quarterback Luke Holloway ran the ball for a first down, he threw a thirty yard pass to Seth Reece up the field for another Fannin first down. The Rebels were in perfect scoring position for Owensby to carry the ball 36 yards for his second touchdown of the night. With Sosebee’s fair kick, Fannin extended their lead 14-0.
Sophomore Sawyer Moreland made the tackle from Sosebee’s kickoff to stop Lumpkin from advancing up the field. Despite Fannin’s great defense, the Indians were able to get into good scoring position and throw the ball into their endzone for a Lumpkin County touchdown. The kick was good, putting the score at 14-7 with Lumpkin trailing behind the Rebels.
With Owensby on the return and earning a first down, Holloway also ran the ball for another first down on the next play for the first quarter to come to an end as Fannin led 14-7.
The Rebels defense came out ready to play as they refused to give up any more points. As Holloway kept handing off to Owensy to earn first downs, it put the Rebels in great scoring position for Will Mosely to run the ball for another Fannin touchdown. Sara’s great kick put the score at 21-7 for Lumpkin to have possession of the ball and once again be stopped by the Rebels defense.
Fannin freshman, Logan Long, made his presence known on defense as he made a big stop for the Rebels. Jackson Weeks and Jakob Tuggle followed the trend as they applied heavy pressure on Lumpkins offense to shut them down.
After Holloway made passes to Carson Beavers to advance the Rebels up the field, the quarterback ran the ball in for a Fannin touchdown. Sosebee’s attempt at the extra point was good, closing out the second quarter with Fannin ahead 28-7.
Micah O’Neal and Will Mosely started off the second half with great stops on defense. Miles Johnson did the same as he deflected a pass from the quarterback. Goodwin continued having great coverage as he followed a Lumpkin Indian into the end zone and kept a touchdown pass from being caught.
As Owensby kept pushing through Lumpkin’s defense, it put Holloway in great position to throw a pass to Andre Bivens for a touchdown. Sosebee continued her great kicking with a successful extra point and put the Rebels ahead 35-7 to go into the fourth quarter.
Rebel junior, Jake Sands, was the first to make something happen in the fourth quarter as he made a tackle for Fannin’s defense. Underclassmen, Carson Collis, also made himself known on defense as he made a big stop for Fannin.
Lumpkin had a burst of energy as they threw a long pass into the end zone for another Indian touchdown to put the score at 35-14.
Carson Beavers had a long return from the kickoff as he moved Fannin up the field. Holloway started to handoff to Caleb Postell who was able to gain yards for Fannin. Freshman Cade Sands managed to do the same as he was given the ball from a handoff. Sophomore Carter Mann was the last one to make a play as he made a tackle on defense for the clock to wind down on Fannin’s 35-14 victory, sending them to the playoffs for the second year in a row!
Fannin’s victory puts their overall record at 6-3 and their region record at 3-2. Catch the Rebel’s next game on Friday as they take on Greater Atlanta Christain at home for their senior night, starting at 7:30!
