Betty Jean Slater

August 4, 1945 – May 18, 2019

Betty Jean McVey Slater, age 73 of Blue Ridge passed away on Saturday, May 18, 2019 at home. Mrs. Slater was born on August 4, 1945 in Blue Ridge to the late Manuel Levi McVey and Gladys Marie Thrasher McVey. She had worked for Macy’s and Foley’s Department Stores. Mrs. Slater was a member of Sugar Creek Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Larry W. Slater of Blue Ridge, GA; three sons, Michael W. Slater of Blue Ridge, GA, Tommy Slater of Lubbock, TX and Stephen Slater of Austin, TX; three grandchildren, Kimberly, Jake and Brian Slater; three step-grandchildren, Mikey, Destiny and Chris Carrillo; one great-grandchild, Rylee Slater; one sister, Sue Bates of Canton, GA and two brothers, Kenneth McVey of Ellijay, GA and Edward McVey of Jefferson, NC.

Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. from the Akins Funeral Home of Blue Ridge Chapel. Pallbearers will be Dean Floyd, Andy Bates, Landon Bartlett, Sammy McVey, Gary McVey, Geoffrey Nelson-Slater and Curtis Floyd. Interment will follow in the Sugar Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening, May 21, 2019 from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family request memorial donations be made to Sugar Creek Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, C/O Jimmy Cox, 1077 Cox Road, Blue Ridge, GA 30513. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.akinsfuneralhome.com. Akins Funeral Home of Blue Ridge is in charge of the arrangements.
