Herdis Bascom Petty: Obituary

Herdis Bascom Petty, age 86, of Blue Ridge passed away on Sunday, February 25, 2018 at his home. Born on November 24, 1931 in Fannin County, he was the son of the late Joseph Bascom Petty and Velvie Pittman Petty. He was a member of Saint Anthony’s Catholic Church. He served in the United States Army. He worked for 20 years at Great Lakes Steel and later retired after 16 years as a Police Officer.

He is preceded in death by his parents; daughter and son-in-law, Deborah Kay and Michael Dennis Inman; sister, Beaddie Panter; and brother, Roy Petty.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Frances Norrene Thibault Petty of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Douglas Joseph and Diane Petty of Ball Ground; daughter and son-in-law, Dawn Cecilia and Donald Hunley of Howell, MI; grandchildren, Steven (Hannah) Inman; Amanda (Tim) O’Laughlin, Kaylyn Petty, Douglas Joseph Petty II, Christopher Hunley, and Brandon Hunley; great-grandchildren, Hailey Ciera Inman, Skylar O’Laughlin, Evan Kayce O’Laughlin, Maverick Michael O’Laughlin, Micah Douglas Inman, and Savannah Grace Inman; brothers, Doyal Petty and James Renus Petty of Mineral Bluff; and sisters, Aleece Sutton of Mineral Bluff and JoLynn Hezlep of Memphis.

Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at 1:00 pm from the Akins Funeral Home Chapel. Steven Inman will officiate. Military honors will be provided by the North Georgia Honor Guard. Interment will follow in the McCaysville Church of Christ Cemetery. Douglas Petty II, Christopher Hunley, Brandon Hunley, Tim O’Laughlin, Derek Petty, and Denton Petty will serve as pallbearers. Wayne Queen will serve as honorary pallbearer. Friends may visit on Tuesday afternoon after 1:00 pm however the family will especially meet with friends from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm on Tuesday Evening. Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.akinsfuneralhome.com. Akins Funeral Home of Blue Ridge is in charge of the arrangements.
