Mrs. Carol Virginia “Ginny” Mattox, affectionately known as “Meaw,” passed away September 19, 2016, at Copper Basin Medical Center after suffering a stroke. She was 92 years old and had lived life to the fullest until days prior to her death. Born in Newark, OH, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Horton and Carol Ferne Wyeth Buxton. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a long-time member of Lebanon Baptist Church where she served faithfully for years in the bereavement meals ministry and the homebound ministry. Her husband, Joseph “Joe” Henry Mattox, and siblings, Margie Williams and Don, James, and Charles Buxton, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Kathi and Rev. Claude Mathis of Blue Ridge; grandchildren, Ginger and Rev. Clinton Hughes of Hogansville, GA; Rev. Scotty and Amber Mathis of Mineral Bluff, GA; Candy Taylor of Toccoa, GA; and Lynn and Mitch Franklin of Vass, NC; great-grandchildren, Abigail and Annelise Hughes; Max, Owen, and Lucy Mathis; Korbin Meeks; and Raegan, Sawyer, Ridge, Saxton, and Rockwell Franklin; brother, Jerry Buxton, of Newark, OH; and sisters-in-law, Dorothy Conley of Knoxville, TN and Winnie Buxton of Heath, OH.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, September 22, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. at Lebanon Baptist Church with Rev. Claude Mathis and Rev. Scotty Mathis officiating. Mrs. Mattox will lie in state from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. Music will be provided by Carol Thomas and Rev. David McLendon. Interment will follow in the Lebanon Baptist Church cemetery with the following gentlemen serving as pallbearers: Rev. Scotty Mathis, Max Mathis, Owen Mathis, Rev. G.W. Mathis, Rev. Al Patterson, Rev. Clinton Hughes, Mitch Franklin, Dave Buxton, Tim Buxton, Brian Buxton, and Joshua Buxton. Deacons of Lebanon Baptist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday evening from 5:00 – 8:30 p.m. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to the Morganton and Mountaintown Baptist Associations at P.O.
