Kiwanis Withdrawing Their Offer to Help with Playground
Letters to Editor December 4, 2015
Angie, Bruce and Rodney:
This morning at the Chamber “Eggs and Issues” breakfast with David Ralston and Steve Gooch, I sat next to Tommy Vanoy of the Kiwanis committee who is applying for a playground grant. Tommy told me that when they read the newspaper where Rodney made the statement: “we do not want to do anything on that end of the park, the playground is fine where it is and the way it is” the Kiwanis committee was insulted and have decided to look elsewhere in the county to place their playground. Because you cannot make a decision, the Kiwanis are going to miss getting this done this year during their 100th year celebration. They are very disappointed with all of you and are proceeding with the grant and getting the playground equipment which will now be located in one of the county parks.
What a HUGE mistake you have made. The children and families who use this playground and our park deserve better and deserve to know who cost them the opportunity to get a much better, safer & accessible playground, a much better BBQ pit and a better designed and handicap accessible park so that ALL can use. You had two grants “given to you” without any effort on your part probably in the neighborhood of $300,000+/- before it was over with. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to get grants and any money for that fact these days? NO, because none of you have taken the time to learn about grants and what is involved in applying and chasing money. I hope you are so ashamed of yourself for allowing this to happen.
I take this very personally because my son and his fiancé were in a critical car accident here 2.5 years ago. She is now 26 and a quadriplegic. Her wheelchair weighs 500 pounds. Our park is not accessible for her or any other handicap people in wheelchairs. If you had been at the “Light Up Blue Ridge” celebration and lighting of the tree this last weekend, you would have seen all the people who are in wheelchairs in our town.
Shame on you!!!!
Sincerely,
