Rev. William Hoyt Smith: Obituary

Rev. William Hoyt Smith, affectionately known as “Mr. Bill”, of Cleveland, TN passed away Thursday, March 19, 2015. Bill was preceded in death by his loving wife, Helen Ruth Arpe Smith who passed away January 10, 2012, son, James Smith who passed away December 02, 2001, great-grandchildren, Tisha Postell in October 2005 and D.J.Payne in November 2011, his parents, Rans and Ruth Owen Smith,and siblings, Jimmy Smith, Herbert Smith, Betty Mosley and Winnie Jo Levine. He worked for the Cities Service and Tennessee Chemical Company for thirty four years. Rev. Smith pastored many area churches including Mt. Pleasant Baptist, Ranger Baptist and Mt. Liberty Baptist in North Carolina. After retirement he and Helen Ruth moved to Cleveland, TN where he worked for the Bradley County School System where he became known as “Mr. Bill”.

He is survived by children, Danny Joe and wife Jayne of Cleveland, TN, Patricia and husband Dee Hamby of the Hiwassee Dam Community, North Carolina; brothers, Bobby Smith of Cleveland,TN, Don Smith of Cleveland, TN, Kenneth Smith of Ducktown, TN. Thirteen grandchildren; twenty one great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, March 28th at 2:00 p.m. from the Akins of Copperhill Chapel with Rev. Josh Ledford officiating. Music will be by Stacy Wallace and Lisa Standridge. In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be made to a church of choice. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 12:00 noon until the service hour at 2:00 p.m. Condolences to the family may be sent to www.akinsfuneralhome.com.
