Got Your High School Diploma?

Mountain Education Charter High School (MEC) is an educational resource for many Fannin County high school students. Its main objective is to help students who have left a traditional high school, complete the necessary requirements to receive a diploma. Classes are all taught through computer-based programs with the assistance of qualified and supportive teachers. Students work independently on the classes they need and can only move forward when they successfully complete each module. Each student also has a mentor who monitors their weekly progress and adds another layer of support.
MEC currently has fifty-two seniors who are moving toward their diploma and graduation. Kennedy Wardsworth, one of our seniors, says she has been able to “thrive” at MEC. She loves the environment and finds that she is able to get things done. When asked, Adam Knowles, another of our seniors, said that he feels MEC has that “vibe” for him; the school and its atmosphere is all about the students. He also feels it has been a second chance for him. Math has always been difficult but he finds the teachers have really given him the help and support he needs and he looks forward to coming to MEC every night.
In addition to classes on campus, there is a push to get students enrolled in the dual enrollment program at the local colleges. Students are able to earn college credit and high school credit while taking classes at North Georgia Technical College, for example. Maggie Espinosa, a high school junior, finds that the flexibility in MEC scheduling allows a student to have a job, do dual enrollment, and work on one’s high school credits. Maggie is taking a medical terminology class at North Georgia Technical College as she works toward her CNA and ultimate RN degree.
MEC is open Monday through Thursday, 4-8 pm, and is held at Fannin County Middle School.
