BRES Hosts Second Annual Reading Fair

On Thursday, March 27, 2014, Blue Ridge Elementary School hosted the Second Annual Blue Ridge Elementary Reading Fair. It was a tremendous success with over 200 family members attending!The fair’s theme was The Wizard of Oz, and it centered on a competition of storyboards within each grade. A special thanks to all students and families who entered the contest. Students and parents participated in arts & crafts activities, storytelling, games, resources to build reading skills, a puppet show, foods from children’s literature, Accelerated Reader information, Fannin County Library Card sign up, Munchkin Makeovers, a photograph from Oz, gardening, sign language instruction, a chance to meet a published author from our school, and door prizes galore. None of this would have been possible without the tremendous support we received from all of our local businesses. Many thanks goes to Jacky Jones Buick for their gift of an electronic book reader which was our grand prize. Mercier Orchards allowed us to show appreciation to our four judges. We would like to thank the Fannin County Library for partnering with Blue Ridge Elementary for this wonderful night of reading fun and issuing our students with public library cards! Also, we want to thank Walmart of both Blairsville and Ellijay for the generous gift cards to purchase board games for door prizes. Quinn’s Nursery and Greenhouse was incredibly generous in their contribution of 150 plants and dirt so that all children could “plant a rainbow” based on the popular children’s book by Lois Ehlert. United Community Bank was generous in their donation of puzzles for game rewards. Kevin Panter Insurance, the Sisson Company, and Town & Country Furniture and Appliance, we appreciate the generous monetary award that helped fund additional games, crafts and door prizes! Additional thanks goes to The Sweet Shoppe, Dairy Queen Grill & Chill, Arby’s, Cohutta Cove Mini Golf, and Wendy’s, who contributed treats to the winning storyboard recipients! Blue Ridge Elementary PTO supported us by providing dinner with assistance from Food Lion and the Trailer Drive In. We would also like to thank the numerous parents, teachers, and community volunteers worked contributed countless hours preparing for the fair. Without your contribution, our dream would not have once again become a reality. Thank you to our four judges, Brenda Payne, Brenda Jones, Marie Herndon, and Fran Strickland. Your patience and participation in this educational event was definitely cherished and appreciated. It truly does “take a village to raise a child,” and without the support of our parents, teachers, and community the impossible would not have been made possible again!
