Pickens student gets court date

FYN has become aware of the fate of the young man that is allegedly charged with assault as well as other charges during a middle school basketball game Saturday, January 25 at Fannin Middle School. The young man is going to be placed on house arrest until his court date of February 18th.At the initial court hearing today many family and friends gathered at the Fannin County Courthouse. Most all of the Pickens Middle School basketball team was present to give the young man support and courage.

After the hearing, school resource officers from both counties advised parents to let them know if they saw or heard anything that may shed light on the case. The school has video footage that shows the events of the day but does not have any sound with it as the machine only downloads the video. Facebook posts indicate there were racial slurs involved but without eyewitness accounts that will be difficult to establish.

The officers wouldn’t comment further than to notify the crowd there is a continuing investigation that will likely carry through the court date. Pickens County Superintendent of Education Dr. Lula Perry expressed the same sentiment.

“Our attorney has advised us we can’t comment during an ongoing investigation,”

Perry reported.

Fannin County Superintendent Mark Henson said that the school district is working alongside the Fannin County Sheriff’s Office in the case as well as conducting their own independent administrative investigation.

While rumors are rampant, the facts listed above are all that have been substantiated and with the ages of the involved parties, details can be expected to remain scarce for the immediate future.

Fannin County correspondent Matthew K. Curtis has contributed to this story.
