The Lady Rebels faced the Lady Cats of Gilmer County on the final day of the Tip-Off Tournament. Having won the first two games of the round robin tournament, defeating Copper Basin 50-9 and Pickens 41-32, a win over Gilmer would give the Lady Rebels the title. A loss, on the other hand, would make it a three way tie for Co-Champions. Ultimately the Lady Rebels road to victory, winning 40-37 over the Gilmer’s Lady Bobcats.Hope Cochran got things started for the Lady Rebels, making a basket and drawing the foul. A Lindsey Humphrey steal led to a Molly Chandler basket, followed by another steal moments later. Fannin was firing on all cylinders, opening up the game on a 9-0 run and finishing the quarter with a 19-6 lead.
The second quarter was a different story for both teams. The Lady “Cats” found its rhythm and 15 points in the quarter, compared to just five points by the Lady Rebels.
Anna Ware, Cochran, and Chandler contributed those points in the second quarter and they looked to come out in the third quarter and find the magic they had to begin the game.
The third quarter was one to forget for both teams. Neither was able to get anything going which some would attribute to great defensive play. Regardless of what caused it, only eight points were scored between the two teams combined.
Gilmer outscored the Lady Rebels 6-2 in the third, with Fannin’s lone points coming off of a McKenzey Ryder basket to open scoring in the quarter. Fannin trailed 27-26 heading into the fourth and final quarter.
Molly Chandler took over the game in the fourth quarter, scoring 10 of her 18 points. The game was close down the stretch with both teams relying on foul shooting.
The Lady “Cats” had pulled within one point with just four seconds left on the clock, but Humphrey sealed the deal when she knocked down a pair of free throws two seconds later. The Lady Rebels claimed first place with the three point (40-37) win, and finished the tournament undefeated.
Cochran, Chandler and Humphrey were all named to the All-Tournament Team.
