This has been a busy weekend for EMA. Fannin County Fire Department responded to 3 structure fires between Friday afternoon and early Monday morning (reports attached). Sunday afternoon around 4:30PM we had two hikers who accidentally got off a trail while returning to their car in the Cohutta Wilderness Area. We were able to locate their position by getting GPS coordinates through their cell phone and determined that they were on the west side of the area. We had them camp at that location for the night and sent a crew from Murray County EMA in the next morning to bring them out unharmed.
About two hours after the hikers were reported lost, a hunter was reported missing in the northeast part of Fannin County. His wife stated that he had left on foot with his dog before daylight Sunday morning and had failed to return by approximately 6:30 that evening. We determined that it would not be safe to put our SAR team in the woods that evening after dark and opted to wait until Monday morning to begin the search. Before we began the search, the hunter returned home unharmed. We had requested assistance from Fannin County Sheriff’s Office, Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office (tracking dog), and Georgia State Patrol’s Helicopter.
