Grandparent’s Celebrate with BRES Students

The faculty and students set aside Friday, September 13, 2013 to celebrate the important role of Grandparent’s in the children’s lives by hosting a luncheon for the kids’ loved ones to come eat with them. With the origin of Grandparent’s Day uncertain, some consider that a housewife in West Virginia named Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade to be the main driving force for the day to be observed. Throughout the 1970s, she worked hard to educate people about the important contributions senior citizens made and the contributions they would be willing to make if asked. She also urged people to adopt a grandparent, not for a day out of the year and not for material giving but for a lifetime of experience. Regardless of who is responsible for the day being set aside, in 1978, President Jimmy Carter proclaimed that National Grandparent’s Day would be celebrated each year on the first Sunday after Labor Day.

At Blue Ridge Elementary, grandparents filled the halls and chatter filled the rooms. It was hard to determine if the students were more excited or if the grandparents were. As each class was called to lunch, grandparents were united with their grandchildren as they ventured through the lunch line to enjoy their choice of lunch together.

Moments In Time Photography was also on hand to capture a special photo of the special day.

At the end of the day, staff members were exhausted but the event was a success with over 100 grandparents attending.
