Business License and Red Ribbon Week Main Topics at BOC

Fannin County Board of Commissioners held its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 27th. The meeting started out with a crowed jury with people on edge from the events that occurred in the meeting prior.Ron Bolin would start the meeting off with the invocation. During the prayer he would ask that everyone have respect for one another. This theme of respecting one another would carry on throughout the meeting. It would start with a young man.

Marine Sergeant Ethan Legler was at the meeting to speak to the commissioners and onlookers the importance of Red Ribbon Week. Legler would go through the history of how Red Ribbon Week began and the importance it has.

Legler would leave the podium with a short plea,

“Ronald Reagan declared the last week of Oct. Red Ribbon Week. I’m asking you to stand with me to teach my generation to win this war on drugs.”

With no other main topics for discussion the board opened the floor for public comments. Blue Ridge Mayor Donna Whitener would be the only one to speak up. She was there to thank the board for all of there input and everything they did to help with the recent water main break.

Once the public had their chance to speak each of the board members had there turn. Post One Commissioner Earl Johnson would speak up about Fannin County Business Licenses.

Fannin County is one of the few counties that do not require a Business License to operate outside of the city limits. The city of Blue Ridge has a requirement in place causing businesses to have one. If the commissioners put a requirement in, they would be able to receive new tax dollars from applicants.

Johnson would go on to say,

“I would like to ask the people what their thoughts were on the idea. I ask you please share your ideas. I would love to hear a broad spectrum.”

The commissioners would leave the idea on the table. The following video shows the entire Aug. 27 meeting.
