4-H’ers Visit Mercier Orchards

On Wednesday, May 15, the Fannin County 4-H Club was invited to Mercier Orchards for a day of strawberry picking.Coordinated through the Fannin County Farm Bureau, the children were greeted by Mrs. Andrea Verner. Upon arrival they were given a John Deere tractor key chain and a basket to pick strawberries. The day started out with a wagon ride tour of the orchard. Then they were brought to the strawberry patch where the children picked and ate strawberries to their hearts content. The children enjoyed eating the fresh sweet strawberries so much they forgot to fill their baskets and needed help filling their baskets prior to leaving. Some of the children had never eaten a fresh strawberry right from the patch. Afterwards the 4-Hers were brought back to the store and given fresh cider and donuts. Again some of the children had never tasted apple cider. The children left with a belly full of strawberries and a full basket of strawberries to take home. It was truly a treat for all to enjoy. Many thanks to Mrs. Verner of the Georgia Farm Bureau and Mercier Orchards for a day of fun. The children were accompanied by Fannin County Extension Coordinator Ed Ayers and volunteer 4-H Program Assistant Marie Traylor.
