Rabid Llama in Morganton

At least four people have been exposed to a rabid llama in Morganton.Fannin County Environmental Health officials urged all individuals to seek medical attention after possible exposure to the infected animal that was housed on a property off of Elrod Road. A veterinarian was called to the property at the end of December because caregivers noticed signs of the disease.

Symptoms shown in the animal included loss of motor skills, aggression and biting itself and others. It even spat on one of the caregivers.

Samples were taken from the llama after it was euthanized. These samples were sent to two different labs and both labs determined that the llama was, in fact, infected with rabies. The Ocoee Animal Hospital received these results January 4th.

In most human cases, rabies results in death if treatment is not received. As such, health officials encourage anyone with possible exposure to seek medical treatment.
