At approximately 7:20 PM on Tuesday, Oct. 30, Fannin County 911 center received a call from 2 hikers reporting they had stayed too long and had no flashlight or water as it was getting dark. They reported that they were on the Benton-McKaye Trail north of Springer Mountain. US Forest Service, Fannin County Sheriff’s Office and Fire Dept. volunteers responded to the area, stationing personnel at areas where the trail crossed roads and fire department volunteers along with Fire Chief Larry Thomas went onto the trail with 4 wheelers. The hikers came off of the trail, uninjured, onto Noontootla Rd. where they were found by US Forest Service officials at around midnight.

Fannin EMS has responded to an increasing number of 911 calls for victims of fall injuries. Leaves, either wet or dry, can be a fall hazard on steps and sloping ground causing broken bones or more serious injuries.

Dispatched to the above location for the report of a structure fire. Units arrive on scene to find home owner burning leaves. Cancelled all response.

Dispatched to the above location for the report of a Brush fire threatening other structures. Arriving units found that two trucks could handle, and cancelled any further response.

Dispatched to the above location for the report of a Camper fire. With a residence and propane close by. Arriving units advised that camper was fully involved. Used a line from Engine 2 to control and ext. fire.

And since we have been having these cool nights, and the leaves are falling the Fannin County Fire Department urges everyone that will be burning leaves to Always use caution and keep a safe distance from other structures. Also, always have a Rake and Water Hose when burning.

Georgia requires that everyone conducting outdoor fires to have a Burn Permit. Only Cooking fires are exempt from these permits. And always remember to check you batteries in your Smoke Detectors.
