Capable Cougars Trounce Towns

The Copper Basin Cougars took on the Towns County Indians Friday night, October 5, 2012. The game was competitive going into the half, but the Cougars cruised to a 52-34 win.Towns County’s first possession resulted in a 12 yard touchdown pass and a successful two point conversion to go up 8-0.

Denzell Brown took the kickoff back 50 yards to set up great field position for his Cougars. The Cougars turned the field position into points after a 22 yard touchdown pass to Stephen Spargo. Dylan Boggs then completed the two point conversion to Bryce Nicholson to tie the game at 8.

On Basin’s next defensive possession, Stephen Spargo intercepted the Indian pass to give the Cougars back the ball. A few plays later the Cougars fumbled the ball and gave it back to Towns.

After a stop by the Cougar defense, the Indians were forced to punt. The punt went to Denzell Brown who took it back 63 yards for a Cougar touchdown. At this point, Copper Basin led 15-8.

In the second quarter, Towns County would mount a comeback. They marched down the field and punched the ball in from two yards out to come within one point after a failed extra point.

On Basin’s next possession, Dylan Boggs completed a pass to Aaron English to put his Cougars in the red zone. Boggs called his own number on a nine yard touchdown run. A fake extra point led to a pass to Stephen Spargo that put the Cougars up 23-14.

Bryce Nicholson intercepted a pass in the end zone to keep the Cougars ahead going into the half.

Coming out of halftime, Boggs marched his Cougars down the field, but was picked off and saw it go back for an Indian touchdown. This got the Indians to within two points of the Cougar lead, 23-21.

The Cougars took over and marched back down the field but were unsuccessful on a fourth down attempt.

This gave the ball back to Towns County and they scored points on a QB keeper that led to them holding the lead for just the second time in the game, 28-23 Indians.

The Towns lead did not last long. Dylan Boggs completed a 55 yard touchdown pass to Stephen Spargo. Quantavious Brown punched in the two point conversion to put the Cougars up 31-28.

Trevor Jones recovered an Indian fumble to give the ball back to the Cougars. Bryce Nicholson carried for a big run that set up a 20 yard touchdown run by Boggs, 38-28 Cougars.

During a run heavy Cougar possession, Bryce Nicholson punched the ball in from 11 yards out to increase the Cougar lead to 45-28.

Copper Basin scored again on a two yard run from Denzell Brown. The Indians answered with a QB keeper to cut the score to 52-34, but this was not enough as the Cougars ran out the clock to seal a victory.
