Cochran Funeral Home and Crematory of Blairsville announces funeral services for Mrs. Lavon Crawford Butt, aged 99 years, of Blairsville, Georgia, who passed away in Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.
Mrs. Butt was born in Blairsville, Georgia, on August 20, 1913, a daughter of the late George Edward Crawford and the late Mary Belle Walker Crawford. She was a lifelong resident of Blairsville, and was retired from the Union County Public School System, where she had taught for 25 years. Mrs. Butt had worked for 12 years with the Mountain Regional Library; during her tenure, she was instrumental in obtaining funding for the new Mountain Regional Library Building in Young Harris, Georgia. Mrs. Butt was a member of First United Methodist Church of Union County, and had worked tirelessly, along with others, to obtain the goal of a new sanctuary and all the additions at the church. An active member of the Retired Teacher’s Association; Union County Historical Society, Union General Hospital Auxiliary, and The Golden Club – Mrs. Butt was a great asset to our community as she worked diligently for the good of the community, well into her 90’s. Preceding her in death was her husband, Sylvan Butt; a son, Jasper Owenby Butt; sisters: Sharon Jones; Lorena O’Neal; and brothers: Joffre Crawford, Dormas Crawford and Joe Crawford.
Mrs. Butt was dearly loved by her family and the community. She will be greatly missed, and leaves behind these family members: granddaughter and her husband, Mary Ellen and David Pickman, of Arrington, Tennessee; sister, Delphia Millar, of Abilene, Texas and brother, Daniel C. Crawford, of Blairsville; grandchildren: Jonathan Pickman, Rebecca Pickman, Benjamin Pickman, and Seth Pickman; many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral services for Mrs. Butt have been scheduled for Thursday, October 11, 2012, at 3:00 p.m., in the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville. The following gentlemen have been selected to serve as pallbearers: Mickey Jones, Terry Jones, David Pickman, Jonathan Pickman, Jerry Penland, Jeff Berry, and Scott Hudgins. Serving as honorary escort will be George Berry, Clark Crawford, James Jones, and Dan Crawford. Burial will be in Union Memory Gardens Cemetery in Blairsville.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, October 11, 2012, beginning at 1:00 p.m., and end at 3:00 p.m., when the funeral will begin.
