Mountain Education Charter High School Has Ribbon Cutting
Rebel's Corner September 24, 2012
Mountain Education Center High School was started in 1993 with the mission to reduce the drop-out rate in the communities it served by giving students a second chance to earn a Georgia accredited high school diploma. There was one site in Union County. Since that time, MEC has expanded to 8 sites in the northeast section of North Georgia. In 2007 MEC became a charter school with AYP being based on EOCT results. Mark Henson, Fannin County School System Superintendent, has been on the Board of Directors of MEC for the last six years. He has worked with the Board trying to establish a site in Fannin County so our students wouldn’t have to travel to Union or Gilmer County. In August 2011 the Fannin County Site opened its doors for the first time.
With the start of the new school year on August 6, 2012, we now have a new name – Mountain Education Charter High School – and a new location – Fannin County Middle School. Our classes are from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm from Monday thru Thursday. We have 2 Administrators, 2 Registrars, 1 Nutrition Worker, 1 Social Worker, 1 Graduation Coach, 1 Counselor, 1 Career Specialist, 1 Resource Officer, 7 teachers, 1 technology specialist and 1 parapro. Our staff rotates nights so that all of our students are able to progress through our curriculum in order to obtain a regular high school diploma.
Students obtain Carnegie Units and meet all of the Georgia Board of Education graduation requirements to obtain their Georgia High School Diploma. Our curriculum is a self-paced, computer based program. Teachers and staff provide support to help students earn their required Carnegie Units. We also offer certified Special Education teachers and services at the school. Each May we have a graduation ceremony where the students receive the diplomas they have earned through the years. All of this is at no cost to the student.
Another service that MEC offers is credit recovery for students who are enrolled in day school but need to make up credits they have lost at their home school. There is a reasonable fee for each of these credits
.
With the start of the new school year, we now have a nutrition program which provides a supper for the students. Students are able to apply for free or reduced status for the meals.
