Dark Night for Sunbright as Basin Blasts Tigers 35-0

The Copper Basin Cougars made sure it was a dark night for the Sunbright Tigers Friday, August 24, 2012. Not even “Batman” could keep the Cougars from being the “Bane” of the Tigers’ existence, as Basin “Harvey Updyked” the roots of the Tiger’s offense. Basin shutout Sunbright by eclipsing the Tigers’ shine 35-0 to start the season off with a 2-0 record. The only bright spot for Sunbright was the opening coin toss. The Tigers won the coin toss and deferred to the second half.

On Basin’s first play, Denzel Brown carried the ball for nine yards. Justin Vasquez picked up the first with a five yard run of his own. Dylan Boggs then proceeded to drop a bomb into the hands of Stephen Spargo for a 56 yard Cougar touchdown pass and reception. Basin led 7-0.

The next Cougar’s drive produced nothing more than incomplete passes, penalties and a punt.

Basin’s defense stood strong as they were able to stop the Sunbright offense short of a first down resulting in a turnover on downs.

Basin’s offense opened the next series with a six yard Denzel Brown carry. The second play was near disaster, as Basin bobbled the pitch on an option play; however, Bryce Nicholson, recovered his own fumble for a seven yard loss.

On third and forever, Boggs broke out of the Basin pocket for a 10 yard QB scramble, still seven yards short of the first down.

On the ensuing Sunbright possession, Denzel Brown, proved it would not be a “Safe House” for the Tigers’ offense, as he picked off his first pass off the night. The Basin offense was unable to take advantage due to fumbling the ball back to Sunbright on another option play.

Neither team’s offense was able to produce more than punts until just before the second half. Nicholson’s 15 yard punt return, deep into Sunbright territory, sparked a touchdown drive from Basin. Fittingly, Nicholson was the receptient.

The Tigers’ offense sputtered on the first possession of the secon half. Afterward, Dylan Boggs tossed a 36 yard touchdown pass to Bryce Nicholson on a drive that mostly featured runs by Denzel Brown.

The next Basin drive featured a plethora of mistakes including a fumble and a couple of offensive penalties.

Denzel Brown was a “Man on Fire” when he intercepted his second Sunbright pass of the game and returned it 56 yards for a Basin touchdown.

Brown returned a Sunbright punt for a touchdown as well, but a block in the back penalty, on Basin, and an unsportsman like conduct penalty, on Sunbright, resulted in a re-kick.

On Basin’s final drive, they tried to run as much clock off as they could before Dylan Boggs called his own number and rushed for a 13 yard Cougar touchdown to cap off the game a 35-0 Basin victory.
