“The Real American Dream”

SamuelAdams.com is the official website of a brewery named for a great patriot and signer of the Declaration of Independence. On the home page (which you have to be 21 to enter, by the way) is a link to “Brewing the American Dream”. When the true “American Dream” was being forged by our Founding Fathers, it was way not about beer; rather, it had everything to do with establishing a nation devoted to serving and honoring Jesus Christ, God’s Son and our Savior. Upon signing the Declaration of Independence, Samuel Adams stated, “We have this day restored the Sovereign to whom all men out to be obedient. He reigns in Heaven, and from the rising to the setting of the sun, let His Kingdom come.” Samuel, along with his cousin John Adams, who also signed America’s birth certificate and went on to become her second president, was an ardent Jesus follower. His personal testimony was simple and direct: “I rely upon the merits of Jesus Christ for the pardon of all my sins.”

John Quincy Adams, son of our second president, and nephew to Samuel, became our sixth president. In a speech given on the 4th of July, 1837, Pres. Adams explained how our Founders envisioned America. “In the chain of human events, America’s birth as a Christian nation was indissolubly linked with the Savior, the one who brought life and immortality to light. America’s birth forms a leading event in the progress of the Gospel dispensation. Is it not that the Declaration of Independence first organized the social compact on the foundation of the Redeemer’s mission upon earth? That it laid the corner stone of human government upon the first precepts of Christianity, and gave to the world the first irrevocable pledge of the fulfillment of the prophecies, announced directly from Heaven at the birth of the Savior and predicted by the greatest of the Hebrew prophets six hundred years before?”

The Biblical passages the President was referring to included Luke. 2.14, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men”, and Isaiah 9.6-7, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”

America was birthed by men who firmly believed they were creating a society based on the Lordship of Christ. They built a nation patterned after “the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God” as declared in Scripture. They believed that true government was impossible without faith in and allegiance to the Son of God. Their battle cry for freedom was “No king but King Jesus!” The American Dream, in the beginning, had nothing to do with beer; it had everything to do with the Gospel!
