Pink Lady Rebels Ride at Home: Boys Barely Beaten by Tigers

The Fannin County High School Rebels basketball teams hosted the Tigers of Dawson County, in the first ever, basketball, “Pink Out,” in honor of those who have dealt with the effects of breast cancer. The Lady Rebels tied the Lady Tigers’ tails with a 45-38 victory. The Rebels boys’ basketball team fell 38-23.The Lady Rebels’ drew first blood with a driving lay up from Ashley Ellison, which sparked a 6-2 run, enabled by the Lady Tigers turning the ball over, on the first two Dawson possessions of the game.

Fannin’s Hope Cochran’s work on the glass was keeping the Lady Tigers from procuring a plethora of second chance points. Mallory Arp’s short jumper increased the lead to 10-4 shortly before the end of the quarter. The Lady Rebels led 12-8 at the end of the quarter, after a Dawson buzzer beating lay up ended the period.

The Lady Tigers pressed through out the first quarter and in the second, using it to take the take a three point, 15-13, lead with a 7-1 run. A Logan O’Neal three, with 2:31 left in the first half gave Fannin back the lead, 18-17. The half ended with the Lady Rebels leading 20-17.

Both games featured a short scrimmage between two of the youth recreation teams as the half time entertainment.

Scoring was at a premium in the third quarter as a total of 11 points were scored in the period. The Lady Rebels outscored the visitors 8-7. Amanda Kinser’s buzzer beating lay up made the score 28-24 going into the fourth.

Dawson opened the fourth quarter with a quick 5-0 run that cut the lead to one, 28-27. Ellison’s three increased the lead to 31-29, with just less than six minutes left in the game. Dawson took a two point, 33-31 lead, with 4:38 left in the game.

The Lady Tigers led by six, 37-31 with 3:17 left; however, a 6-0 run that featured another three from Ellison, a free throw form Bethany Taylor, and a Kinser put back, tied the game with 1:45 left.

Another Ellison three gave Fannin the lead for good with 1:43 left in the game. An Arp free throw increased the lead to 41-38. Ellison hit another three at the buzzer, giving the game its final score of 45-38 in Fannin’s favor.

The boys’ game began with first blood once again being drawn by Fannin. Jason Arp’s three opened the scoring for the Rebels. It’ sparked an 8-0 run by the Rebels that resulted in a Dawson time out.

The time out proved to be effective, as the Tigers answered the Rebels’ run with an 8-0 run of its own. The first quarter ended with the game tied 8-8.

The Tigers opened the second quarter with a three to take an 11-8 lead. A Will Patterson lay up, off an assist from Will Mason, made the score 13-11. The Rebels went into half time down six, 19-13.

Dawson scored two quick buckets to take a ten point, 23-13; lead with less than a minute played in the second half. Patterson’s lay up cut the lead to 23-15.

Patterson had scored all of Fannin’s third quarter points, until a hook shot from Jonathan Vecchio, cut the Dawson lead to 30-21. The quarter would end with the score the same.

Only 10 points were scored in the fourth quarter between the teams, due to fact that Dawson went into the “four corners” hold the ball, that saw the Fannin forced into what looked like the world’s biggest game of “Monkey in the Middle.” Fannin was unable to score until Luke Adams’ jumper hit with 45.6 left in the game, making the score 35-23.

Dawson hit three free throws to secure the 38-23 win for the Tigers.
