Lady Rebels Beatdown Bobcats

The Fannin County Lady Rebels basketball team, lead by senior Lauren Junnier, and her game high 15 points, thoroughly thrashed the visiting Lady Bobcats of Gilmer County 50-24.The game opened up with the the Lady Bobcats taking a short lived 4-2 lead after working the post with sophomore Brittany Lowman who scored Gilmer’s first four points on a basket and two free throws. The Lady Rebels tied the game on a put back by senior Kaileigh Satterfield. The teams traded turnovers for a few possessions before Fannin used a 8-2 run to close out the quarter with a 12-6 lead, despite Lowman’s three block shots in the quarter.

That six point deficit was the closest the Lady Bobcats would get the rest of the game. They had no answer for Junnier, who was almost unstoppable in the post, hitting one particular reverse lay up that drew thunderous applause from the home crowd. The Lady Rebels used a 15-0 run to pull away, leading 27-6 before junior Ansley Mulkey broke the Gilmer scoring drought with a two point basket. The Lady Rebels took a 29-10 lead into the half.

The halftime show featured talent provided by Studio 1 Performing Arts School, located in Ellijay. Several groups of girls ranging from a elementary to high school age performed Hip Hop dance routines for the home crowd, including one group that was lead by “The Grinch.”

The Lady Rebels came out of the half looking to finish what they started in the first half. Senior Cherish Evans had two of four steals in the first few minutes of the third. The Lady Rebels suffocating defense held their counterparts to four total points in the whole quarter, which allowed them to take a 42-14 lead into the final quarter of the game.

As both coaches began to empty their bench the Lady Bobcats were able to match their point total from their first quarter with 10 while the Lady Rebels scored eight to provide the final score of 50-24.
