Rebel becomes Cavalier

Although the Fannin County High School Baseball season may have gotten cut short, the seniors are still able to move forward and look ahead into their futures with excitement. Senior Jerritt Holloway took the step to further his baseball career by committing to continue his studies and play the sport at Montreat College in North Carolina.

Holloway was not only involved in baseball, but he also took up basketball in his last year of high school. The dual athlete was seen as a leader amongst his peers and was given the position of Blue Crew leader to guide the student section in each football game to energize the team and show off their Rebel Pride.

Jerritt has played baseball for the past 15 years and is excited to continue the trend throughout college. He has played baseball for the school the past four years where he has lettered two of those on the Varsity team at the position of catcher. The athlete stated that his favorite memory of the sport would be, “When Miles Johnson stole home in the North Hall Series.”

Junior year was the peak for the athlete when he was given the title of Rookie of the Year and was part of the team’s success as they made it all the way to the Elite 8 and finished fifth in the state. When asking Jerritt why he chose to commit to Montreat College he replied, “ The reason I chose Montreat College is because the number one thing they care about is family. They have each other’s backs. Also, the campus is beautiful. I just want to make my family proud, get a college education, and go play the game that I love. This has always been a dream of mine and I thank God for everything he has blessed me with.”

“Jerritt is the catalyst that got our baseball team going. When he went, we went a lot of times and it started with the grit and determination that he has to get the job done. Much like he has done to achieve his dream to play at the next level. He had a goal and a “why” and he came to work for that each and every day whether it was at practice or in the game. The greatest sacrifice of all is sacrificing for a fellow teammate and he was willing to do that every pitch. I am extremely proud of him and of this senior class. All five seniors have committed to play college baseball, which gets us to 10 guys in the last three years. It was an honor to coach these guys and be a small part of the journey,” Head Coach Travis Stone of the Fannin County Rebel Baseball team shared with Team FYN Sports.

Good luck to the Rebel in his journey to North Carolina as he becomes a Cavalier and represents Fannin County High School well on and off of the field.

Last night, Wednesday, March 11, the Lumpkin Co. Indians traveled to Blue Ridge for a region game with Fannin Co.

Despite 2-for-3 games from senior Jerritt Holloway and junior Bradley Holloway, the Rebels (2-9, 0-1 Region 7-3A) couldn’t overcome two RBIs each from Lumpkin Co.’s Caleb Childs and Dalton Caldwell and the Indians (6-8, 1-3) took a 5-4, six-inning win back to Dahlonega.

Lumpkin Co. came out ready to play in the first inning as they quickly loaded the bases.

Childs went up to the plate for the Indians and drove in his two runs with a line-drive single to right field to bring home Logan Choflet and Chase Beamon and take a 2-0 lead.

Senior Carson Beavers was on the mound for Fannin Co. He finished the game with nine strikeouts in the complete-game, six-inning outing.

Beavers earned the second out of the inning with a strikeout with runners on second and third base.

Caldwell kept the trend going for the Indians as he hit a line drive to right field and brought in Branden Alewine and Childs to extend the Indians lead 4-0 before the Rebels could earn their third out of the inning.

With two outs at the bottom of the first inning, Fannin Co. put the ball into action. Hayden Cleland was on the mound for Lumpkin Co. before Chris Day came in from the bullpen to relieve him for the rest of the game and strikeout two batters overall. Before he exited the game, Cleland hit two batters back-to-back to put Fannin Co. on first and second base in the bottom of the first frame.

Jerritt Holloway was the first to make contact with the ball as he hit a line drive to left field, bringing in senior Matthew Shirah to put the score at 4-1.

Junior Brady Martin continued the rally with a hard grounder to left field, bringing home senior Blake Rogers and Jerrit Holloway, to put the Rebels just one run behind the Indians at 4-3. With a 3-1 count, Bradley Holloway drove a ball to center field, earning a double and driving Brady Martin home to tie the game 4-4. Cleland was able to get Lumpkin Co. out of the high-scoring inning as he earned his third strikeout.

In the top of the second inning, Lumpkin Co. managed to put runners on first and third. Beamon continued his great hitting for the night as he earned a single on a line drive to right field, bringing Sean Swistek home for the Indians to take a 5-4 lead against the Rebels before they could earn their third out on the following play. The Indians were able to shut down Fannin Co. on offense as they earned a quick three outs to close out the second.

The score remained the same heading into the bottom of the sixth inning.

Bradley Holloway was the one to get the momentum going again for the Rebels with a ground-ball single to first base. Caleb Postell was able to advance Bradley Holloway to second base as he laid down a bunt and was safe at first.

Wyatt Rogers also singled on a bunt to load the bases with no outs.

As Beavers was up at the plate with a chance to drive in some runs, lightning was seen in the area and the game was put on a delay.

The delay lasted for about three hours before the umpires called the game, leaving Lumpkin Co. with a 5-4 region victory against Fannin Co.

Martin finished the night 1-for-2 with two RBIs, a run scored, and a walk for Fannin Co.

Childs and Caldwell each went 1-for-3 with two RBIs, with Childs adding a run scored for Lumpkin Co.

Beamon finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for the Indians.

Day earned the win on the mound, throwing 4 1/3 innings, while giving up just one earned run and two walks and striking out two.

The two teams are scheduled to face off again Friday, March 13, in a doubleheader slated to begin at 5 p.m. in Dahlonega.
