Lady Bobcats Paw Their Way to Victory Over Lady Warriors

Uncategorized

This past Saturday at the Mountaintop Holiday Classic, the Lady Bobcats and the Lady Warriors came ready to play their last game of the tournament. Both teams were coming from a loss the day before and ready to win the matchup for third place.

It was a “foul” game full of twists and turns. There were fouls left and right and the lead went from team to team. Lady Bobcat, Marylee Callihan, led Gilmer in scoring with nineteen points thanks to her hustle. Lady Warrior, Dasha Cannon, led White County in scoring with nineteen points due to aggressive playing. The Lady Bobcats had good cuts and passes inside which was how they did most of their damage. Lady Bobcat post, Michaela Staley, contributed ten points for her team from down low. The Lady Warriors scored the majority of their points from driving the lane. Lady Warrior, Naumi Crumbley, added fourteen points to White County’s score due to her ability to make layups. The Lady Warriors had the lead at the end of the first quarter with a score of 23-14.

Both teams were putting heavy defensive pressure on the other and drawing fouls. Out of Lady Bobcat Taylor Boling’s nine points, five of them were from foul shots. With Maddie Futch’s overall three points for the Lady Warriors, two of them were scored from the free throw line. Makenna Maysic also contributed two points from foul shots out of her six overall for White County. The Lady Warriors ran into some foul trouble towards the end of the second quarter when two technicals were called on them. The first foul being on player Kyleigh Johnson who scored an overall fifteen points for her team. The second being on the Lady Warriors head coach, Buster Brown. Even after many fouls, the Lady Warriors still had a lead over the Lady Bobcats with a score of 39-32.

The Lady Bobcats picked up their hustle at the beginning of the third quarter. Lady Bobcat, Hope Colwell, proved to be an asset to Gilmer’s defense by going hard and getting steals. Lady Warrior, Bentley Cronic, had a good game above the key by contributing three points for her team. Another Warrior, Annabeth Vandiver, added two points onto the Lady Warriors score. Lady Bobcat, Emma Callihan, put eleven points on the board with her scrappy playing. Gilmer started looking up the court to find Katie Kiker who added ten points to the Lady Bobcats score. Madi Phillips for the Lady Warriors added six points to White County’s score to extend their lead. At the end of the third quarter, the game was tied 53-53. It was Gilmer’s ball when they looked inside and found Mallory Kiser who contributed fourteen points overall, two being scored as the buzzer sounded to end the quarter which put the Lady Bobcats in the lead 55-53.

The intensity came alive at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Both teams started to foul more in attempts to stop the other one from scoring. The score was tied 70-70 with seven seconds left on the clock. Everyone was expecting the game to go into overtime when the Warriors fouled number ten for Gilmer, Marylee Callihan, with only one second left. With the pressure being high, Callihan stepped up to the free throw line. Callihan was given three shots and she made them all, putting Gilmer in third place of the tournament with a 73-70 victory over the Lady Warriors.

After the game, it was time for the awards and trophy to be given. The three Lady Warriors to be selected for All Tournament Players were Naumi Crumbley, Madi Phillips, and Dasha Cannon. Before the Lady Bobcats claimed their third place trophy, Marylee Callihan, Mallory Kiser, and Taylor Boiling were selected as Gilmer’s All Tournament Players.

The Gilmer County Lady Bobcats win puts their overall record at 8-6 while the Lady Warriors stand at 9-6. Lady Dragon, Mykenzie Weaver, led Pickens County in scoring with twenty-three points. The Warriors started looking up the court and found Naoumi Crumley who scored eight points overall. As the first quarter came to an end, the Lady Dragons had a 19-12 lead over the Lady Warriors.

With the Lady Warriors only seven points away from the Lady Dragons, they picked up the intensity. Lady Warrior, Dasha Cannon, contributed eighteen points for White County with her powerful ball handling skills. Kyleigh Johnson put four points on the board for the Lady Warriors with her scrappy playing. The Warriors started to double team the Lady Dragons on defense which resulted in steals and more points. Warriors Slay the Dragons

Uncategorized

This past Friday at the Mountaintop Holiday Classic, the White County Warriors and the Pickens County Dragons traveled to Fannin County for their match up on day two of the tournament. Both teams were coming off of a loss from the first day of the tournament and ready to walk away with a win.

It was a high action and fast paced game from the start. The Dragons made the majority of their points from down low while the Warriors did most of their damage from driving the lane. Dragon post, Seth Bishop, led Pickens in scoring from the block with twenty-one points. Warrior guard, Austin Harris, led his team in scoring with twenty-four points due to his hustle. Warrior post, Austin Rowland, had the hustle on defense to make steals and contribute twelve points for his team. With the Warriors in the lead near the end of the third quarter, Pickens makes a buzzer beater shot to tie the game 17-17.

The hopes were high at the beginning of the second quarter. Both teams had the same chances of winning and were not giving up. The lead went from team to team and it became unpredictable on who would have it next. Warrior, Chandler Harris’s outside shooting came alive which put eleven points on the board for White County. Warriors, Reece Dockery and J. Ben Haynes, also had a good game above the key by each adding five points to White County’s score. The Warriors took a seven point lead over the Dragons at the end of the second quarter by making the score 29-22.

With Pickens down more than they had been the entire game, they were determined to make a come back. Both teams applied heavy defensive pressure on the other by putting a full court press into action. The press resulted in both teams getting steals and adding onto their score. At the end of the third quarter, White County doubled their lead over Pickens with a score of 47-33.

Pickens picked up the pace at the start of the fourth quarter. The Warriors start to put even more defensive pressure on the Dragons and draw fouls. Warrior, Jay Lepkoske, contributed one of his five points from the free throw line. The Warriors also started to have good looks inside which resulted in Kaleb Crane’s overall four points. Warriors, Daniel Rowland and Cooper Turner, followed the trend and each added four points onto White County’s score. However, the Warriors were not the only ones adding onto their score. The Dragons came back at the end of the fourth quarter with a score of 53-53, putting the game into overtime.

The intensity came alive at the beginning of the quarter. Both teams had four minutes to win the game. Pickens finally took the lead that they had been working for the whole game just to have the score tied once again at 63-63, putting the game into double overtime.

Four more minutes were put on the clock as both teams gave the game their all. The quarter was filled with hustle after loose balls, fouls from attempting to keep the other team from scoring, and heart. The back and forth of the game had everyone on their feet as they watched with anticipation. Although both teams played to the best of their ability, the White County Warriors had a 74-67 victory over the Pickens County Dragons.

The White County Warriors win puts their overall record at 9-4 while the Pickens County Dragons stand at 4-9. Catch the Warriors next game on January 2 at 5:45 as they travel to take on North Cobb Christian!

Bobcats Deliver a Technical Knockout to The Rebels

Team FYN Sports

This past Friday on day two of the Mountaintop Holiday Classic, the Gilmer Bobcats traveled to take on the Fannin Rebels. Gilmer was warmed up from their win on day one against Coahulla Creek while the Rebels were ready to play their first game of the tournament. Both teams were determined to wrap up day two of the tournament with a win.

You could see the determination on all of the players faces as soon as they took the court. The rival teams were neck and neck from the beginning to the end of the game. Rebel, Chandler Kendall, led Fannin in scoring with thirteen points due to his ability to make outside shots. Bobcat, Kell Weaver, was an asset inside and led his team in scoring with twenty points.

Post for the Rebels, Joel Kinser, got back in the game after recovering from a concussion a few games prior. Kinser had grit down low and contributed three points for his team. As the end of the nail biting first quarter approached, Gilmer led Fannin with a score of 8-5.

The lead went from team to team. Tyler Sims of the Bobcats drove the lane and contributed twelve points overall for Gilmer. Another Bobcat, David Smith, followed the trend and scored two points for his team.

Fannin guard Joe Satchell, had snatches on defense and put eight more points on the board for Fannin. Another Rebel sharp-shooter, Jack Gobble, added onto Fannin’s score by making a three point shot. As the second quarter came to an end, the Bobcats doubled their lead over Fannin from the first quarter with a score of 21-15.

As Gilmer’s lead grew, Fannin fought harder to catch up. Rebel, Payton Holt, contributed eight points overall for Fannin with his hustle. Rebel, Ryan Beavers, was the go to guy on the block who put eleven points on the board for his team. With the Rebels score increasing, so did their number of fouls. Bobcat, Carter Hice, scored two points for Gilmer off of foul shots. Out of Bobcat Tripp Pierce’s ten points, seven of them were from foul shots. The Rebels were catching up to the Bobcats at the end of the third quarter with a score of 34-31, cutting Gilmer’s lead from the second quarter in half.

At the start of the fourth quarter, it appeared to be anyone’s game. Gilmer kept passing inside while Fannin drove the lane and took outside shots. Although the teams had different methods, they both proved to be effective. That is, until the Rebels ran into foul trouble.

With the tension being very high, Fannin had two technical fouls called on them. One being on player, Chandler Kendall. The second being on head coach, Scott Eggleston. Gilmer chose Bobcat, Coady Cobb, to shoot the technical free throws.

With Gilmer’s score behind Fannin’s, Cobb made his first shot to tie up the game. Even with the high pressure, Cobb made his second shot, putting Gilmer in the lead. Cobb contributed six points overall for the Bobcats.

With Gilmer in the lead, Fannin fouled even more. Rebel, Chandler Kendall, fouled out towards the end of the quarter. As Fannin kept fouling, Gilmer’s score increased. As the clock started to wind down, Gilmer took a 52-46 win over Fannin which put them in the championship game to be played the next day.

The Bobcat’s win puts their overall record at 5-8 while the Rebels stand at 3-11. Catch the Gilmer Bobcats next game on January 5 at 8:30 as they travel to take on Northwest Whitfield! Or catch the Fannin Rebels next game on the same day and at the same time at home as they take on GAC!

Three Fannin Wrestlers headed to state tournament

FCHS Wrestling

Since taking the reigns of the wrestling program at Fannin County High School, head coach David Henson has been working to create a winning culture.  Each year he begins the season with a team meeting, where he discusses team and individual goals and expectations.  While he expects his athletes to have fun, he also pushes them to toe-the-line, hoping to see them standing on the podium at the end of the season.

This year, three of Fannin’s varsity boys have fought their way to the big finale – the GHSA Traditional State Championships.  The tournament will be held in Macon later this week.

To get to the state event, wrestlers first had to place within the top four of their class at Area competition.  In doing so, they then qualified to compete at the Sectional tournament this past weekend at Greater Atlanta Christian School.  The Area 6-AAA meet was held last weekend (Jan 17) at Morgan County High School in Madison.  113 lbs sophomore Landon Galloway (2nd Place),  126 lbs freshman McCay Turner (4th Place) and  heavyweight senior Bradley Flowers each qualified to advance to the Sectional meet.  Flowers was the Area Champion, going undefeated in the event.

“It felt great to win,” Flowers told TeamFYNSports after winning the Area tournament.  “Coach Henson and Coach Hutsell have been telling me to keep working hard in practice and this is something I’ve trained hard for.”

At the Sectional meet, the top eight finishers qualify to advance to the state tournament in Macon.  Flowers finished 3rd, Turner finished 4th and Galloway once again came away with a 2nd place finish to advance all three teammates to state.

At the state tournament, Flowers (31-6) will face Dalton senior Walter Richards (54-5) in his first match to kick off the bracket.  Turner (41-10) will face senior Blake Rice (3-0 in the 126-lb class) of Hall County; and Galloway (30-7) will lock horns with Calhoun freshman Blake Bailey (27-10).  Weigh-ins are at 10am on Thursday morning and TeamFYNSports will be on location, posting updates on twitter and facebook throughout the tournament.

Lady Tigers cruise to victory, Tigers come up short in OT

Uncategorized
DAWSON, GA – Saturday, Jan 6, the Dawson County Lady Tigers (9-7, 1-3 Region 7-AAA) hosted the Forsyth Central Lady Bulldogs (7-9, 0-2 Region 5-AAAAAAA) and although this was a non-region contest, the ladies from Dawson County showed up ready to play. This was the second time this season that these to programs met on the hardwood, as Dawson’s varsity girls took a 19-pt victory on the Lady Bulldog’s court on Dec 16.
Not taking their second meeting for granted, Dawson County started the game strong and finished in the same manner, leaving no doubt that the best team won Saturday afternoon.  The final margin?  A whopping 30 points, the biggest loss served to the Lady Bulldogs this season!  Final score: 66-36.
With a dominating 30-pt victory and more than 60-pts on the scoreboard, the Lady Tigers clearly know how to shoot a basketball.  Leading the scoring for the Lady Tigers in her first game back from injury was Kaylee Sticker – with 19 points (including four 3 pointers).  She was followed by Sophia d’Oliveria with 10 points, respectively.
Dawson County head coach Steve Sweat also had plenty to be proud of in the effort of his girls on the defensive side of the basketball, providing a balanced performance of defensive pressure and accurate shooting offensively.
The Lady Tigers will be at home on Tuesday hosting Union County (11-4, 3-1) in what should be an exciting game for Region 7-AAA.  The Lady Panthers are coming off a four game win streak and currently sit tied for second overall in the region (with North Hall).  Tip-off is scheduled for 6pm and you won’t want to miss this one.  Union County has a reputation for traveling well, so if you’re a fan of your Tigers you’ll want to make it a point to get to the game early and cheer for your varsity girls and boys!
On the boys side, the Tigers (12-4 overall, 4-0 Region 7-AAA) took a tough loss to a strong Forsyth Central Bulldogs team 63-57 in overtime.  This was the second consecutive night the Tigers forced overtime against a strong team.  Just one night prior to this matchup, the Tigers took the victory over East Hall in Gainesville, 94-91.
Though head coach Chad Pittman was proud of the effort of his team in this game, the Tigers unfortunately did not appear to have the energy to hold off the Bulldogs in the overtime period.  They fought hard and played well, and despite the loss they showed everyone in attendance why they are the team to beat in Region 7-AAA.
Dawson County was led in scoring by Jeremiah Crumley with 25, followed by Cullen Reed with 22 and Campbell Reed with 7.
The Tigers will hit the hardwoods again Tuesday night at 7:30 when they host Union County (13-2, 3-1), who’s only region loss came by the hands of East Hall (77-61) on Jan 3.

Wright Way: Rebels unable to contain Union qb in 37-14 loss

FCHS Football

In the afternoon prior to Fannin County’s game against the Union County Panthers last Friday, the sun was shining if you looked to the northern end of the field you could see Old Glory gently waving behind a comfortable breeze. Fast-forward 45 minutes and winter had come, with fans bundled up so tight in their cold-weather gear it looked like a bunch of white-walkers from the tv series Game of Thrones were entering the stands.

It was cold.

You know what else was cold? Cole Wright, senior quarterback for the Union Panthers and college-commit for West Point.  Ice cold.

The Fannin Rebels’ defense had no answer for Wright, as he picked the secondary apart with precision-passing and took advantage of soft coverage when it presented itself, by eating up yardage with his feet.

Friday night’s game was the first game since the opening minute-and-a-half against Greater Atlanta Christian where we actually saw him play at 100% health. A serious foot injury sidelined him for the remainder of that loss, then restricted him in losses against Dawson, East Hall and North Hall.

The Rebels found themselves down 10-0 early, as their offense struggled to run the football and by the time senior quarterback Chandler Smith was given an opportunity to pass, the Union defense was ready for it and covered up his receivers. The Fannin coaches began rotating running backs to maximize use of their depth, and senior defensive back Jonah Henry was the first Rebel to carry the ball to paydirt for Fannin. The PAT by Sarah Sosebee was good (as always), and Fannin trailed 10-7.

It took Cole Wright less than 2-minutes to march back down the field and he carried the ball across the goal line himself for the next touchdown, Union regaining their 10-point lead, 17-7.

Determined to run the football, Fannin employed a strategy we had not seen all season from the Rebels, putting two running backs in the backfield. Senior tailback Cody Jacobs took a couple of direct snaps and cut between the tackles, stunning the Panthers. Henry lined up in the tailback position and ran the ball as well. However, on a 4th-and-2 play in their own territory and only 3:44 remaining in the half, the defense keyed on the backs and tackled Jacobs behind the line of scrimmage for a turnover on downs.

Another two minutes passed, and another touchdown pass by Cole Wright put the Panthers up 24-7 with 1:22 remaining in the half. Unable to get down field with such a short period of time, Fannin would take the locker room trailing by 17.

The third quarter was a defensive battle, neither team willing to give ground to their opponents. On the first play of the 4th quarter, however, Wright hit Hemphill (#4) with a 60-yard pass to put the Panthers up 31-7.

The Rebels continued to play hard, despite trailing by 24 with less than 11 minutes remaining in the game, and eventually their hard work paid off with another touchdown for Fannin.

It appeared as though the final score would be 31-14, but with 38 seconds remaining senior Cole Dockery of the Union Panthers took the ball 62-yards for the final blow, resulting in the 37-14 final.

Union County travels to take on the Lumpkin Indians this week, while Fannin County prepares for senior night as they host East Hall. East Hall suffered a shocking loss last week against North Hall, dropping them to fourth in Region 7 (AAA).

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30pm.

East Hall Outlast Fannin In Shootout

FCHS Football

On Friday night the Rebels headed to Gainesville for the season finale looking for their first win in Region play.

From the opening drive of the game you could tell that it would be a game without any defense as QB, Brad Davis, connected with Cooper Earls for the games first touchdown with under two minutes played in the img_2532game. On the following drive by East Hall, the Vikings had a huge gain on the ground of about 50 yards before being brought down. A few plays later the Vikings were able to force their way into the end zone. After the the East Hall touchdown the Rebels were able to drive the field but would stall just inside the 20. Bryan Carranza would come out and hit the 31 yard field goal with 5:32 left in the 1st quarter.

East Hall would only take 2 minutes off of the clock before scoring another touchdown on the ground. Both defenses struggled with tackling all night long. On the Rebels final drive of the first quarter was the only drive during the first that didn’t end with a score. The Rebels would get inside the 30 before failing to convert on 4th down. Immediately after the turnover on down the Rebels caught a break as #87, Jacob Hood, intercepted the pass! The Rebels would get the ball into the red zone as time expired in the 1st quarter with a score of 13-9, East Hall.

On the continuation of the drive, breakout running back, Hunter Gray, ran in for a 5 yard score. Following the Gray touchdown, Brandon Carranza would surprise the special teams unit from East Hall with an onside kick, and the Rebels would recover of course. I have never seen a kicker be this good at onside kicks. Throughout the season there was probably only two onside kicks that Fannin did not recover. The Rebels would take advantage of the great field position and score quick again. Hunter Gray got his second img_2525touchdown of the night, this time on a 9 yard rushing play. During the first East Hall drive of the 2nd quarter the Viking running back broke through the line and looked like he could score, until Jacob Reece made a huge play forcing a fumble in the Rebels side of the field, recovered by Brad Davis. Fannin would again only use 2 minutes before scoring again, this time as rushing touchdown by Cooper Earls. With 3:23 left in the half, Fannin led 30-13.

East Hall would score in the next 40 seconds on a screen pass that went about 50 yards. Following the the Vikings score the Rebels would stall on the other side of the 50 before stalling and punting for the first time in the game. With under two minutes left on the clock the Vikings would turn to the air attack and score on a jump pass with 45 seconds left in the half. At halftime the Rebels lead the Vikings 30-29.

To start the second half the Vikings were ready to recieve the kick before Carranza caught them slipping again as he surmised them with an onside kick. With the ball already on the Vikings side of the field it took no time at all for the Rebels to march the ball down the field before Hunter Gray punched the ball in from 1 yard out for his third touchdown of the game. East Hall would only need a minute and half before scoring on a 30 yard passing touchdown, the Vikings would fail on the two-point conversion. Davis would answer the passing touchdown with one of his own as he would connect with Earls for a 40 yard passing touchdown, Fannin would convert on the two point conversion. The following kickoff was returned for a img_2595touchdown by East Hall. At the end of the 3rd quarter the Rebels had the ball in scoring position and led 45-43.

On the first play of the 4th quarter, Jacob Reece would have his first touchdown of the night on a 6 yard rushing play. The Vikings would continue the quick scoring trans as they would score on a 56 yard passing touchdown just 45 seconds after the Rebels touchdown. This time they would convert on the two-point conversion, now trailing 52-51. On the following drive the Rebels would take 3 minutes off the clock before having the punt the ball back to the Vikings. East Hall would take over on their own 22 yard line with under 7 minutes remaining. They would move the ball as fast as they had all night, getting to the Rebels 40 before throwing another deep pass for a touchdown and not convert on the two-point conversion. With under 5 minutes left in the game it looked as if the Rebels would have a chance to win the game on their final possession. On one of the first plays of the Fannin drive, East Hall would jump the route and score on a 40-yard pick-six with 3:57 left, now leading 65-52. On the very next offensive play #5 from East Hall would intercept the ball again. The Vikings would seal the game on just a minute later with another rushing touchdown. The Rebels were able to score another touchdown but would not have time to mount a comeback. The final of this game was East Hall 71, Fannin County 58. img_2712

The Rebels finish the season 2-8.
