“Man of Steel” is the latest theatrical creation in the Superman saga. It is a new version of the story directed by Zack Snyder, of “300!” fame, and produced by Christopher Nolan, director of “The Dark Knight” series. I must say I was blown away by “The Man of Steel.”
Continue reading "Krypton Sent: The Tale of Clark Kent"

“The Hangover Part III” begins with a look into the life of Alan Garner (Zach Galifianakis), whose thoughtless antics and all-around stupidity has continued to hurt his entire family, including his father (Jeffery Tambor), who has a heart attack and dies following an argument with Alan over an accident that decapitated a pet giraffe and caused a huge pileup on the highway.
Continue reading "“The Hangover Part III” Has Its Moments"

From time to time Hollywood provides us with a movie that has a “can’t miss cast”, one loaded with talented actors and comedians but absent of an interesting story or plot. However, Hollywood bucked that trend with the new film “This Is the End”, a movie about some of the biggest actors in 2013 trying to survive the end of days.
Continue reading "“This Is the End” Uses All-Star Cast to its Advantage"

The second installment of the latest in the Star Trek adaptations is just as good if not better than the first. “Into Darkness” is a little darker, pun intended, than the “first” film. Now listen Trekkies, I don’t want to hear about which number film it is, so save it. For the purpose of MY COLUMN, “Into Darkness” is the second film.
Continue reading "“Star Trek: Into Darkness” Lights Up the Film"

“Iron Man 3” is fantastic from start to finish, there’s no two ways about it, while I did not find it as awesome as “The Avengers” or quite as entertaining as “Iron Man 2,” it was full of adventure and explosion from beginning to end.
Continue reading "Third is No Turd: Iron Man Has Iron Clad Grip The Seat Action"

First off let me say, that of course I saw “42.” How could I not? Just as Dave Chappelle could not admit that OJ may have done it, I must go see a movie about Jackie Robinson; my blackness compels me. There I said it, I felt as a self confessed “urban” sports nerd, I had to see “42.” That being said, it was pretty good, not too preachy, yet it didn’t sugarcoat anything.
Continue reading "“42” Film Finds Mark"

First and foremost I must say, those who did not enjoy “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra,” are wrong, just plain wrong. The first live action G.I. Joe movie was awesome; it’s actually my all time favorite action movie, well it was until "The Avengers" came out. The Atlanta Braves pulled off a blockbuster trade on Thursday, as the team completed a deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks that brought outfielder Justin Upton and third baseman Chris Johnson to Atlanta and sent utility man Martin Prado, pitchers Randall Delgado and Zeke Spruill, shortstop Nick Ahmed and first baseman Brandon Drury.

The deal sets the Braves up with arguably the best outfield in the majors, as the team will have Justin Upton, his brother B.J., and Jason Heyward all in the same outfield, putting together a trio that last year combined for 72 homeruns with 227 RBIs and a batting average of .265.
The NFL Wild Card weekend is nearly upon us, and what a weekend it promises to be. Headlines are numerous going into the first week of the playoffs for the 2012 season, but one of the most notable stories is the fact that three teams that will be in action are led by rookie signal-callers.

As you can imagine the three quarterbacks in question—Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III, and Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson—have had outstanding seasons which have been the driving forces in their team’s success and playoff berths.
“Jack Reacher,” with Tom Cruise starring as the title character, is an action film about an Army cop investigating a seemingly senseless shooting and the alleged perpetrator. “Reacher” reached deep into my soul and touched me deeply. Cruise cruises through his performance as the charismatic, loner, rule breaker, who just kicks donkey and takes names through out the movie.
Continue reading "“Jack Reacher” Reaches with “Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em” Arresting Action"
Cristobal, who played at the University of Miami in the 1980’s and took over as Golden Panthers head coach after the 2006 season following a three year run as an assistant at his alma mater, posted a 27-47 record in his six years with Florida International, including a 3-9 mark this season.
Continue reading "A Crack in the Cristobal: Florida International Makes a Change"

Those in charge at Purdue decided to end the Danny Hope era in West Lafayette in its fourth year, firing the former Joe Tiller assistant one day after the Boilermakers ended the season on a three-game winning streak and guaranteed themselves their second consecutive bowl game, the first time the team will go to a bowl game in back-to-back season since 2003 and 2004.

Hope, a former head coach at Eastern Kentucky from 2003 to 2007, posted a 22-27 record in his time as Boilermakers head coach with the highlight being last season, when Purdue went 7-6 and won its first bowl game since 2007.
Continue reading "The Purdue Boilermakers are Now Hope-less"

It was announced on Sunday that Auburn and head coach Gene Chizik has parted ways just a day after a 49-0 beatdown by rival Alabama left the Tigers with a disappointing 3-9 record for the year and an 0-8 conference record, their worst in school history.
Continue reading "Auburn Outs Gene Chizik as Head Coach"

In a move that most expected, Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long announced on Saturday morning that John L. Smith will not return as Razorbacks head coach for the 2013 season.

Smith, who was hired in the spring following the firing of Bobby Petrino, had trouble living up to Razorbacks’ fans’ expectations for the season, leading a team that many expected to make a run for the national championship to a 4-8 record, the most losses the team has had in a single season since 1990.

Long said that the team will retain Smith, who has compiled a 136-93 career head coaching record with stints at Idaho, Utah State, Louisville, Michigan State, and Arkansas, as a consultant for the remainder of his ten-month contract, which expires in February of 2013.
University of California, Berkley athletic director Sandy Barbour made the call on Tuesday that many college football experts had been expecting, as she announced that Bears head coach Jeff Tedford had been relieved of his duties.

Tedford, who came to Cal in 2002 after a four-year stint as the Oregon offensive coordinator, rejuvenated a struggling Bears program, leading a team that recorded one win in the season prior to his arrival to nine winning seasons in eleven seasons, including two ten-win seasons.
Continue reading "Tedford Terminated as Bears Head Coach"

UTEP head football coach Mike Price is set to announce his retirement on Monday afternoon after spending thirty-one years as a college football head coach.

Price, who holds a 48-60 record in nine seasons as Miners head coach, has posted a 131-138 record as a FBS coach in his stints at Washington State and UTEP. Price infamously held the Alabama head coaching job for five months in 2003 before an off-the-field incident cost him the job before he ever coached a game for the Crimson Tide.
Tennessee athletic director Dave Hart announced on Sunday afternoon that Volunteers head coach Derek Dooley has been relieved of his duties effective immediately. Volunteers offensive coordinator Jim Chaney will serve as interim head coach for the season-ending game against Kentucky.

Dooley, who posted a 15-21 record with one bowl appearance in three seasons in Knoxville, failed to revive a once-proud Tennessee program, winning only four SEC games in three years while losing to Vanderbilt and Kentucky over the last two years.
Western Michigan athletic director Kathy Beauregard announced today that the school has relieved head football coach Bill Cubit of his duties, one day after the Broncos finished the 2012 season with a 4-8 record.

Cubit, who took over as Broncos head coach in 2005 after a two year stint as Stanford offensive coordinator, posted a 51-47 record at Western Michigan and led the Broncos to three bowl games in his eight seasons as head coach.

Western Michigan experienced a great deal of success under Cubit’s leadership, but the team’s inability to make the most of their pre-season hype over the past few years—they were often picked to win the MAC West, which they never accomplished—along with the team’s 29-23 loss to an Eastern Michigan team that came into the game with a 1-9 record ultimately cost Cubit his job.
Kentucky Wildcats athletic director Mitch Barnhart announced Sunday on UKAthletics.com that head coach Joker Phillips will not return to the program in 2013.
Phillips, a Kentucky alum who took over once Rich Brooks retired in 2009, has posted a 12-23 record through three seasons as head coach with the team sitting at 1-9 with two games remaining in the 2012 season.
The Idaho Vandals became the first FBS school to make a head coaching change during this season, as the school announced on Sunday that Robb Akey had been relieved of his duties, effective immediately.

Akey, who was in the middle of his sixth season as Vandals head coach, posted a 20-50 record at Idaho with the highpoint coming in the 2009 season, when the Vandals finished the year 8-5 and won the Humanitarian Bowl.
This Saturday, October 27th is the day that the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party kicks off again between the #2 Florida Gators and the #10 Georgia Bulldogs, pitting two fierce rivals against each other yet again.

Rivalries in college football are like popcorn at the movies: it’s a huge part of what makes the whole experience so enjoyable. However, I think the scope of a “rivalry game” isn’t quite narrow enough, so I feel the need to set the record straight.
Welcome back to another edition of the Fetch Football Forum, and as one of my colleagues likes to say, it’s been too long since I last left you. In the time that has passed since the last Forum update, we’ve seen a multitude of big wins, thrilling endings, and embarrassing losses in the college football world, which has led to some fan bases being thrilled with their team’s head coach and others not so much.

Today we look at some of the SEC head coaches that may want to have some boxes handy in their office to pack up their belongings once the inevitable occurs.
The time has come for me to speak plainly. Since I was raised an American with American values, and with an understanding of American Exceptionalism, I must speak openly.
One of the best SEC West matchups of the last decade is set to be played on Saturday, as the Auburn Tigers travel to Baton Rouge to take on the #2 LSU Tigers.

While this game has had a history of being played between two of the best teams in all of the FBS, this year’s matchup is a little bit different, as the traveling Tigers are sitting at 1-2 and will be fresh off a 31-28 victory over the UL-Monroe Warhawks. Meanwhile, the home Tigers are sitting pretty at 3-0 and are poised to make another championship run.
Tennessee went into this game looking to beat a rebuilding Florida team pretty easily, but as any die hard Vols fan knows, one can never sleep on the Gators. They will bite you if you underestimate them. That is exactly what they did in a 37-20 win over Tennessee.
Continue reading "Tennessee Trips in 4th, Loses to Gators"

Week three of the college football season saw several moments in SEC play, including the Tide rolling over the Razorbacks, the Gators taking over in the fourth quarter for the second straight week, and the Wildcats wondering if they should even bother still fielding a football squad.
Continue reading "Fetch Football Forum: Week 3 Recap"

Welcome back to the Fetch Football Forum. This week’s key SEC matchup pits the Florida Gators against the Tennessee Volunteers, a matchup that was once the most highly contested in the entire conference but had died down due to the tremendous amount of success that Florida experienced during Urban Meyer’s time in Gainesville. However, this year looks to be different, as Derek Dooley’s Vols finally look reloaded and ready to give the Gators a game.
