Kentucky Wildcats athletic director Mitch Barnhart announced Sunday on UKAthletics.com that head coach Joker Phillips will not return to the program in 2013.

Phillips, a Kentucky alum who took over once Rich Brooks retired in 2009, has posted a 12-23 record through three seasons as head coach with the team sitting at 1-9 with two games remaining in the 2012 season.

Vandals Hurt Akey’s Breaky Heart

The Idaho Vandals became the first FBS school to make a head coaching change during this season, as the school announced on Sunday that Robb Akey had been relieved of his duties, effective immediately.

Akey, who was in the middle of his sixth season as Vandals head coach, posted a 20-50 record at Idaho with the highpoint coming in the 2009 season, when the Vandals finished the year 8-5 and won the Humanitarian Bowl.

This Saturday, October 27th is the day that the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party kicks off again between the #2 Florida Gators and the #10 Georgia Bulldogs, pitting two fierce rivals against each other yet again.

Rivalries in college football are like popcorn at the movies: it’s a huge part of what makes the whole experience so enjoyable. However, I think the scope of a “rivalry game” isn’t quite narrow enough, so I feel the need to set the record straight.

One of the best SEC West matchups of the last decade is set to be played on Saturday, as the Auburn Tigers travel to Baton Rouge to take on the #2 LSU Tigers.

While this game has had a history of being played between two of the best teams in all of the FBS, this year’s matchup is a little bit different, as the traveling Tigers are sitting at 1-2 and will be fresh off a 31-28 victory over the UL-Monroe Warhawks. Meanwhile, the home Tigers are sitting pretty at 3-0 and are poised to make another championship run.

This week’s key SEC matchup pits the Florida Gators against the Tennessee Volunteers, a matchup that was once the most highly contested in the entire conference but had died down due to the tremendous amount of success that Florida experienced during Urban Meyer’s time in Gainesville. However, this year looks to be different, as Derek Dooley’s Vols finally look reloaded and ready to give the Gators a game.
