Grenade Found on Road in Cherokee County NC

Murphy, NC—Cherokee County Sheriff Derrick Palmer announced that at about 6:24 pm on March 23rd, 2015 units responded to East US 64 near Murphy to investigate a report of a possible hand grenade laying on the roadway.
At about 6:24 pm on March 23rd, 2014 the Cherokee County Communications Center received a call from a citizen stating that while driving on East US 64 they saw what they believed to be a grenade laying on the side of the road near the city limits of Murphy.

A unit from the Murphy Police Department was the first officer on scene and confirmed that he had located what he believed to be a hand grenade sitting on the side of the roadway. Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office units, North Carolina Highway Patrol and Murphy Fire Department arrived and shut down a portion of the roadway approximately a mile outside the city limits of Murphy On East US 64.

A call for assistance was made to the Asheville Bomb squad who sent a bomb technician to the scene. The technician found an inert grenade hull which looked as if someone was attempting to make an improvised explosive device. The grenade hull was removed from the scene and the roadway was cleared about 09:05 pm.

Sheriff Palmer stated “We are thankful that our community pulled together so quickly in what could have been a very dangerous situation. In this day and time and with all that is going on in the world you can’t take something like this lightly. We appreciate the assistance of Asheville Police Department as well as their quick response.”
