On Wednesday, November 12, fourteen Fannin County 4-H members attended the Northeast District 4-H Cotton Boll and Consumer Judging Contest at the Chicopee Woods Agri-Center in Gainesville, Georgia. Participating 4-H’ers practiced several weeks in preparation for the contest.

The class was taught the importance of cotton as an agricultural commodity; how to make knowledgeable, rational decisions when purchasing goods and services; and how to be a responsible consumer-citizen with an understanding of the rights and responsibilities of the consumer, business, and government.

At the area contest, junior and senior 4-H members judged the following four classes: raincoats, savings accounts, yogurt, and luggage. After judging the four classes, members had to give reasons on the raincoat class.

Junior members prepared a poster and gave a 30 second commercial promoting cotton. Senior members prepared and presented a 90 second public service announcement about cotton.
