Today, February 14, 2014, at approximately 10:23 pm EST an earthquake hit South Carolina and Georgia, just east of Atlanta. Damage assessment is pending.

Officials state that a 4.4 magnitude South Carolina earthquake hit just after 10:23 pm. The quake was shallow and began only three miles below ground level. Due to this the quake could be felt across the region.

USGS indicates that the quake was seven miles west of Edgefield, South Carolina and nineteen miles north of Evans, Georgia. It was east of Atlanta, Georgia and west of North Augusta.

According to USGS earthquakes in the central and eastern U.S., occur less frequently than in the western U.S., and are typically felt over a much broader region. Typically an earthquake of this magnitude does not result in much damage nonetheless it can still be an unsettling experience.
