Obituaries

The Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville announces funeral services for Mrs. Madeline Shuler Roose, 91, of Atlanta, Georgia who passed away peacefully at Hospice Atlanta on Friday, November 1, 2013.Until shortly before her death, she lived for 10 years in Mt. Vernon Towers where she had a lovely condominium and made many good friends. Immediately prior to her passing she was blessed to live at Sunrise at Buckhead assisted living residence. She was born to Lon and Nancy Shuler on August 26, 1922 and raised in Choestoe / Union County GA. [Choestoe was in Indian term meaning “Land of the Dancing Rabbits”] A lifelong United Methodist, she grew up in Salem Methodist Church which no longer exists. Because of the small sizes of their congregations, that church shared a pastor with Choestoe Baptist Church so the congregations alternated churches on Sunday. For many years she was a member of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church in Atlanta and also Sandy Springs United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Choestoe Baptist Church cemetery next to her husband, Richard S. Roose who passed away in 1970.

She is survived by her daughter, Susan Roose Nolan and son-in-law Harry L. Nolan, Jr. She loved both very much and they loved her very much in return. 9 nieces and nephews and many friends. Madeline graduated from Union County High School in 1939 and Young Harris College in 1941. Immediately after graduation, she taught school for one year at Pinetop School, where she had to walk to work. For the next 5 years she lived in Akron, OH with her sister Dolly and husband Dan Hunter and their children – Dan and Charles [‘Bud’]. There she was employed at Babcock & Wilcox where she worked in personnel. Returning to GA she worked for 8 years for the State of GA Coop for the Blind where her manager was brother-in-law, Glenn Boggs. There she trained blind people to run concession stands in state office buildings. The last stop on her career was the Fulton County GA School System where she worked for 16 years as a librarian – a great role for her because of her outstanding organizational abilities – initially at Heards Ferry Elementary and then Riverwood High School where she was one of the school’s first employees. After officially ‘retiring’ at age 67, she continued working part-time 3 years for Hallmark Cards servicing Wender & Roberts and other drugstores. Never content to sit still, she continued working as a volunteer at Ronald McDonald House and Mt. Vernon Towers Personal Care Center.

For her Atlanta friends there were will be a visitation from 4 – 6 p.m. on Tuesday, November 5 in the Parlor at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church, 3180 Peachtree Road, NW, Atlanta, GA 30305. There will be a visitation from 5 – 7 p.m. on Wednesday, November 6 at Cochran Funeral Home, Blairsville GA 30512. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 7 at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel at Cochran Funeral Home, with a brief, graveside service immediately following at Choestoe Baptist Church.
