Fannin schools are welcoming many new changes to the year. The Fannin BOE held a work session Tues. Aug. 8th discussing all of the new changes. The county has been busy all summer long making improvements to the schools. Each and every school received, and or is in the process of receiving up grades and improvements.

Blue Ridge Elementary School will be enjoying a new roof on the front wing of the school when students return. Along with the roof, the kindergarten restrooms have been renovated. To improve energy cost and to replace defective units, instantaneous gas hot water heaters have been installed as well.

East Fannin Elementary School’s summer project will be noticed upon pulling into the parking lot. This is because there is a new parking area with the rest of the lot getting restriped. The lunch room received the biggest renovations of the school receiving a new HVAC system in the kitchen. This would replace the 20 year old system giving the lunch ladies more space in the kitchen as well. Currently they are still working on replacing the cooler, but there are temporary fixes in place so not to affect lunches for the first few days of school.

West Fannin Elementary School did some summer cleaning during the break. During the off period, the old field house was cleaned out. Along with the field house all of the old classroom radiators where removed. West Fannin along with the other elementary schools will be getting generators installed in the new future as well.

Fannin County Middle School is going to be a little cooler this year. The field house is now equipped with AC and the cafeteria is in the process of finishing up the installation of its new HVAC system. Along with the AC the school received a parking lot face lift with the lot getting sealed and restriped. A new fence can also be seen by the baseball field as well. More security was also on the docket for the summer. Later this week new security cameras will be wired in and ready for use keeping our kids safe. Heaters will be added later for the hallways but currently working on the other project until the fall.

Fannin County High School PAC received a face lift with some new carpet along with a new 20 ton and 10 ton AC unit. Along with the PAC the school put in a new generator system. The kitchen got a new range hood. One big added feature was 300’ of new fire line and a new fire hydrant installed. The new hydrant came with a new six inch water line that can be taped onto for later projects.

Along with all of the schools the Cannery got some new additions as well. These items included a new side walk and canopy, a new insulated roof and a new boiler installed.

New Construction of a new Maintenance Facility is in the prelim stages with plans being drawn up and hopefully seen by the board by the end of the week. This would be a SPLOST funded building. All of these changes were made possible by the SPLOST. The board was pleased to say that all of these projects had no bonded debt.

New buses are close to being on the way to the county as well. The school board is set to approve new bids on buses soon.s This comes after the board declared seven buses surplus allowing them to be sold. These buses will be sold at auction on the 27th of Aug. at the Blue Ridge Auto Auction.

Along with new projects, new faces will also be seen around the schools. During the work session the Board voted in new personnel. One substitute teacher, one substitute custodian, and two substitute bus drivers where voted in during the session.

New policies up on the cutting board too. The board was presented two policies to review to be voted on during the next meeting. The first of the two was Policy JCDAF- Use of Electronic Devices by Students. Since we are leaving in a technology based era this policy needed some attention. Changes in the policy, if approved, will make it where teachers could allow students to use electronic devices if it would help them in learning.

The last policy brought up for discussion was the Policy JGFGB- Concussion Management. This is a new policy that will be put in place to keep the athletes in the county better protected from concussions and how to go about recovering from one.

Fannin County is looking forward to the new school year. With all of the new changes, the schools are getting ready for the fresh start of the year.
