Fannin High School’s basketball teams played in the Region 7-AAA regional tournament this week with mixed results, as the Rebels went one-and-done and the Lady Rebels posted a 2-1 record, which was good enough for third in the tournament and a state tournament berth.
The Rebels went into their first round game ready to try and upset the dangerous North Hall Titans, but unfortunately Fannin started the matchup cold and could not keep up with the North Hall. Before too long, the game was out of reach for the Rebels, and when it was all said and done the Titans had won the game by the final score of 69-22.
Zeke Huffman led the Rebels in scoring with seven points in the contest. Teammate Jonathan Vecchio had 8 rebounds—6 on defense—in the loss.
While the Rebels had trouble early on in the tournament, the Lady Rebels were determined to move on in the tournament, starting with their game against the Banks Lady Leopards. Both teams fought hard through four quarters of action, but the Lady Rebels did just enough to eke out a well-deserved 52-47 victory to move on in the tournament.
Molly Chandler led the Lady Rebels in scoring with nineteen points. Lindsey Humphrey did her part for Fannin, scoring eight points and coming down with five rebounds. Humphrey also had five steals as well as five assists.
Next up for the Lady Rebels was a matchup with the Dawson Lady Tigers. The first quarter of the game saw both teams find their rhythm offensively, and once the first eight minutes of the game were in the books the Lady Tigers held a slim 11-8 lead.
Despite a strong start to the game, the Lady Rebels struggled to match Dawson’s intensity in the second quarter, allowing the Lady Tigers to put together a 22-8 run that gave the Lady Tigers a comfortable 33-16 lead at halftime.
Fannin did what it could to cut into Dawson’s lead, but the team was unable to do enough to have a chance at the win. Dawson would go on to win the game by the final score of 57-38.
Hope Cochran led the Lady Rebels in scoring with twelve points in the game. Close behind was teammate Molly Chandler, who had six points in the loss.
With the chances of winning the regional tournament now extinct, the Lady Rebels instead set their sights on finishing third, which would mean beating the White Lady Warriors.
The first quarter of the game saw Fannin completely dominate White, outscoring the Lady Warriors by the score of 8-2. However, the Lady Warriors responded with a solid second period of play, putting up eleven points to cut the Lady Rebels’ lead to 14-13 going into the locker room.
Fannin would take control of the game in the third quarter, opening the period on a 15-4 run that would turn into a 17-5 quarter and hand the Lady Rebels a 31-18 lead. With victory in sight, Fannin refused to slow down in the final quarter, scoring ten points in what would become a 41-24 win for the Lady Rebels.
Hope Cochran had an outstanding game for Fannin, leading the team in scoring with sixteen points in the game. Cochran also had six rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and one steal.
Molly Chandler did her part to help the Lady Rebels come away with a victory, scoring twelve points and leading the team with rebounds in seven in the contest. Chandler also had an assist, block, and steal in the game.
Thanks to the Lady Rebels’ success in the regional tournament, the team will be playing in the state tournament. Fannin will start the tournament with a matchup with the Decatur Lady Bulldogs, which will be played at Decatur High School on Tuesday, February 19th at 6pm.
