Copper Basin Can’t Pull Off a Win in Tournament Finale

The Copper Basin Lady Cougars and Cougars fought hard on the third and final day of the ETC Piedmont Hospital Tip-Off Tournament but just couldn’t ink out a victory, as the Lady Cougars and the Cougars kept it close with their adversaries from Fannin but ultimately lost to end the tournament with a disappointing 0-3 record. The opening matchup of the day pitted the Lady Cougars against the Lady Rebels. Copper Basin gave their all against Fannin in this one, but a slow start in the first half put the Lady Cougars in a 26-12 hole, a hole that the team just couldn’t get out of.

The team managed eleven second-half points, but it just wasn’t enough to keep up the pace that the Lady Rebels had established. The Lady Rebels would go on to win the game by the score of 46-23.

Tristan Hedden led the Lady Cougars in scoring with eleven points in the game. Hedden along with Kayla Hemming tied for the team-lead in rebounding with seven rebounds each.

Two Lady Cougars were named to the All-Tournament team: Tristan Hedden and Lindsey Brackett.

The Cougars then took the court looking for their first win of the tournament, and their play in the first half made it look entirely possible. Copper Basin overcame a four-point deficit in the first half and came within a point of the Rebels’ lead in the third quarter thanks to a 14-11 point run in the penultimate quarter of play, putting the score at 31-30.

Unfortunately for the Cougars, the Rebels got on a run of their own in the final quarter, outscoring Copper Basin 23-10 to seal a hard-fought 54-40 victory.

Dylan Boggs gave everything he had in hopes of giving the Cougars a victory, and it showed in the stat book. Boggs finished the game with twenty-one points and eleven rebounds in the contest, both team highs.

Karson Swinehart also did his part to keep the Cougars within striking distance, scoring six points and coming down with six rebounds.

Swinehart and Boggs represented Copper Basin on the All-Tournament team.

Copper Basin’s next set of games is on the road against the Meigs Tigers. The junior varsity teams will play at 4:00 p.m. followed by the girls’ game at 6:00 p.m. and the boys’ game at its conclusion.
