Cougars Can’t Catch Breaks in Day Two of Tournament

The Copper Basin Cougars and Lady Cougars played hard against their opponents from Pickens in the second day of the ETC Tipoff Tournament on Monday but wound up on the disappointing end of both games, moving both squads to 0-2 in the tournament.The Lady Cougars opened up day two of the tournament with a meeting with Dragonettes. Both teams fought back-and-forth in the first quarter of play with Copper Basin finding itself down 12-7 once it ended.

The second and third quarter proved to be a problem for the Lady Cougars, as the team was outscored 40-7 in these crucial sixteen minutes of play.
Copper Basin’s defense was able to hold Pickens to just eight points in the fourth quarter, but it was too little too late for the Lady Cougars. Copper Basin lost the game by the final score of 60-18.

Tristan Hedden led the Lady Cougars in scoring with six points in the loss. Lindsey Brackett got the job done as far as rebounding was concerned, reeling in six rebounds. These two players combined for eleven of the team’s eighteen points.

Next up for Copper Basin was a matchup between the Cougars and the Dragons that seemed a lot like déjà vu after the first meeting of the afternoon.
The Cougars stayed toe-to-toe with the Dragons through two quarters of play, trailing by the score of 26-24 at the half. However, the team’s offense slowed down tremendously once the third quarter rolled around, leading to Copper Basin being outscored 21-7.

Things didn’t get much better in the final quarter of play, resulting in the Cougars being outscored by ten and losing by the final score of 69-43.

Dylan Boggs had another fine night for the Cougars, scoring a team-high twenty-two points and bringing down ten rebounds. Stephen Spargo did his job in the game as well, finishing with five points and seven rebounds.

Copper Basin caps off the tournament on Tuesday with games against Fannin. The Lady Cougars and the Lady Rebels face off at 3:00 p.m. with the boys’ game following its conclusion.
