Rev. Edith Ray Hughes, age 96, of Ducktown, TN, passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 30, 2018 in the Lifecare Center of Copper Basin. She was born in Ducktown, TN to the late Hubert and Martha Cross Nicholson. She was a homemaker and a member of the Myrtle Chapter O E S. Rev. Hughes was founder of the McGeetown House of Prayer, now known as Rachel’s Chapel, which she established in the 1960’s. Rev. Hughes loved serving her Lord and Savior traveling around the community gathering people to bring to church services, which at times would last almost until midnight. Afterwards she would take them back to their homes following services. She cared for people and wanted to see them in church. Rev. Hughes was a special person and will be dearly missed by all who knew her. She was also preceded in death by her husbands, John Ray and Paul Hughes, children, Hubert L. Ray, Frances Nicholson and Blanche Brand.

She is survived by ten grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; many great-great grandchildren; step children, Carlton Hughes, Ernest Hughes, Ray Hughes, Larry Hughes, Imogene Hughes, Louise Beasley and Nancy Craig.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, June 2, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. from Rachel’s Chapel Holiness Church with Rev. Dr. Joe Kemper and Rev. Rudy Baliles officiating. Music will be by Rev. Dr. Joe Kemper. Pallbearers include Dale Ray, Barry Brand, Tony Nicholson, Josh Nicholson, Aaron Nicholson and Matthew Ray. The Staff of the Life Care Center of Copper Basin, James Cearley and Freddy Kelly will serve as an honorary escort. Interment will follow in the Harmony Baptist Church cemetery in Blue Ridge, GA. Rev. Hughes will lie in state at the church Saturday from 12:00 p.m. until the funeral hour of 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday evening from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Condolences to the family may be sent online to www.akinsfuneralhome.com.
