News

Fannin County- Recently FetchYourNews.com has received several inquiries regarding health issues of Fannin County Commission Chair Stan Helton.  FYN requested an interview with Helton and directly asked him about rumors that he has cancer.

Helton first said, “I appreciate you coming to me directly, Yes, I have cancer.”  He went on to tell us,  “it was diagnosed back in march.”  Since his diagnosis Helton has been receiving chemotherapy treatments.

He first discovered something was wrong when he saw an irregularity on his back. The type of cancer he has is a really rare form Helton said, called Merkel Cell Cancer.   The official name of it is Merkel Cell Carcinoma, which is not curable but it is treatable.  He will receive 3 days of treatment every 21 days at Erlanger Hospital. His latest treatment was last week. Helton is receiving stage four cancer treatments.

Helton held a staff meeting with all department heads Tuesday morning, May 30th, to let them know he has cancer and is currently undergoing treatment .  When asked about his ability to perform his duty he quickly explained he has the best people to do the jobs which he’s delegated them to do.  He does not believe the illness has inhibited his ability to do his duty.  Even during chemo treatments he’s been able to communicate with his staff through email or texting.   Chairman Stan Helton said “ I’m not quitting.”

I’m a recent Merkel Cell Carcinoma survivor. Stan is right…it’s completely treatable and, as the new drugs have proven, it’s also now curable. Stan…you need to know that there are lots of people who are with you every step of the way and will gladly help you.
