Helen Dorothy Hughes Cook, age 89, of Blairsville, GA, passed away on Tuesday February 24, 2015 at her home after a brief illness.Mrs. Cook was born March 16,1925 in Cherokee County, NC, the daughter of the late Edward & Elsie Price Hughes. She was a graduate of Union County High School. Mrs. Cook worked at Bell Bomber in Marietta, GA during World War II as one of the famous “Rosie the Riveters”. She also worked in a number of local factories.

She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church, Cherokee Co. NC, where she served as a teacher for beginners for a number of years and also Church Clerk for a number of years. She was a member of Notla Chapter #471 Eastern Star, Blairsville GA, receiving her 50 year pin in 2009. She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, James Buford Cook. Surviving Mrs. Cook: daughter and son in law, Joan and Steve Sullivan of Grayson GA, son and daughter in law, Gary and Marcia Cook of Blairsville; Granddaughters and husbands, Kristi & Gavin Holmes of Atlanta, GA, Julie and Ed Hoff of Loganville GA; Grandsons & wives, Jonathan & Tiffany Cook of Blairsville, Nathaniel & Liza Anne Cook of Southport NC; Grandson, Matthew Cook of Wilmington NC; Great Grandson, Sullivan Holmes of Atlanta GA, and great granddaughter, Mahayla Cook of Blairsville; Brothers and Sisters in Law, Richard & Midge Hughes of Akron Ohio, Donald and Frankie Hughes of Murphy NC, Paul and Bettie Hughes of Augusta GA, Jack and Mildred Hughes of Chattanooga TN, and Royce & Muriel Hughes of Murphy NC; A number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral Services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 28, 2015 in the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville with Rev. Ronnie Crisp & Rev. George Cline officiating. Special music will be provided by Kristi Holmes, Teresa Mills, and Martha Davenport. The following gentlemen will serve as Pallbearers: Jonathan Cook, Nathaniel Cook, Matthew Cook, Gavin Holmes, Ed Hoff & David Cook. Burial will be in Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery in Cherokee County, NC.

The family will receive friends on Saturday from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
